TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Sept. 17 (PIA)–Ang Pilipinas ang unang nasud nga nag-export og mga saging sa Estados Unidos human niabot ang unang shipment sa mga highland cavendish gikan sa Bukidnon.
Ang unang shipment nga 7,407 metric tons niabot sa pier sa Los Angeles, California niadtong Setyembre 9 ug una sa gibanabanang 3,000 metric tons sa saging nga e-export karong tuig, matud pa sa opisyal nga pahayag sa Philippine Embassy sa Washington, D.C.
“With this shipment, we are hopeful that Philippine bananas would be able to find and satisfy a niche in the competitive US banana market.”
“We also hope that this is the beginning of increased access of Philippine bananas in North America,” matud pa ni Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr.

“Philippine bananas are among the best in the world and there is opportunity to bring in the unique and special banana varieties like lakatan and latondan, which Filipinos in the US have long been craving for and which Americans can learn to love,” matud pa ni Javelosa.

Every third Saturday of September every year is declared as the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day and Bohol has been one of the consistent active participants in this world’s largest one day gathering of volunteers who will clean-up the environment in the designated areas.
This year’s 28th International Coastal Clean-Up will be simultaneously done on September 21, to start at exactly 6 a.m. when Boholanos from all walks of life head to beaches, waterways and underwater areas to help collect floating and submerged trash/debris that threatens our marine resources and human health.
According to the Bohol Environment Management Office (BEMO), government offices are given their respective areas of assignment and they were provided with ICC data card fill in information on the debris collected.
Participants are required to bring empty sacks, brooms, tongs and utility gloves for picking up wastes.
Wastes and debris are one of the serious and worsening problems today that threaten the lives of many people especially in highly urbanized areas, says BEMO.
Every year, billions of tons of wastes make their way to the sea posing greater threat and dangers to the marine resources and human health.
BEMO added this yearly coastal clean-up is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 470, series of 2003 and reinforced by Executive Order No. 14, series of 2004 of the Bohol Provincial Governor, mandating the province participation in the yearly International Coastal Clean-up.
Bohol governor Edgar Chatto enjoined various government offices, institutions, organizations and all the people of Bohol to actively be involved and participate through cleaning and removing the wastes not only in their respective coastal areas but including rivers, lakes, streams, canals, drainages and other waterways. United States President Barack Obama will visit the Philippines in his four-country ASEAN tour from October 6 to 12, Malacanang said on Saturday.
“Upon the invitation of His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III, President Barack Obama of the United States will be traveling to the Philippines on October 11-12,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a statement on Saturday.
“President Obama will meet President Aquino to discuss ways to further strengthen the enduring Philippines-U.S. alliance, including the expansion of our security, economic, and people-to-people ties.”
Lacierda’s message confirmed a White House statement released on Friday about Obama’s trip to Asia.
The White House said the US President will travel to Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines from October 6 to 12 as part of his ongoing commitment to increase US political, economic and security engagement with the Asia Pacific.
In Indonesia, Obama will attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders meeting. APEC is the region’s leading forum for trade and investment integration.
He will then travel to Brunei for the US-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit (EAS) and to meet with the Sultan of Brunei.
After Brunei, the US leader will proceed to Malaysia to meet with Prime Minister Najib. Obama will highlight the US’s growing bilateral ties with Malaysia, and also deliver the keynote address to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.
The last leg of Obama’s Asian visit will be the Philippines, the fifth Asian treaty ally he has visited during his presidency. He will meet with President Aquino to reaffirm the strong economic, people-to-people, and security links between the two countries, the White House said. (PND)
