DOH asks P19M more for ‘virulent A(H1N1) virus

WITH reports of a more virulent A (H1N1) virus abroad, the country’s Department of Health (DOH) has requested additional funds in preparation for a “second wave” of dreaded A (H1N1) influenza virus.

The fund request also came in following a continuous increase of infected cases in the country despite reports of a mild strain getting into the Philippines.

Dr. Lyndon Leesuy, a medical specialist of the DOH-National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said they have requested over P19-million worth of funds as the cases continue to increase.

Leesuy said the funds would be used in preparation for a “second wave” of the virus with reported presence if a stronger virus strain already hitting other affected countries.

He stressed government and health authorities must prepare for the possibility that the virus may become more virulent.

The additional fund will be for swabbing kits, purchase of anti-viral Oseltamivir or Tamiflu, to equip other hospitals and laboratories nationwide with testing capabilities to help speed up specimen analysis for possible cases of influenza A (H1N1) virus.

On this development, Bohol authorities who are preparing for a worldwide gathering of Boholano potential investors, have asked relatives of balikbayans to remind them of the self quarantine policy which the DOH has recommended.

Provincial Administrator and lawyer Tomas Abapo has asked everyone last Friday to exercise preventive measures like strengthening one’s immune system and following simple coughing and sneezing manners. (PIA)
