Globe to DICT, BCDA: International cable system capacity more than 16 Tbps
Globe Telecom’s international connectivity capacity provides the leading telecommunications provider with the ability to activate more than 16 Terabits per second (Tbps), sufficient to service the bandwidth demand in the country and satisfy the market’s hunger for faster internet services. Globe seeks to correct the separate public pronouncements made by the DICT Undersecretary Eliseo Rio and BCDA President Vince Dizon who placed the industry’s combined capacity at 2 Tbps. While Globe has enough capacity to provide world class internet service, right-of-way access and unreasonable permit issues hamper the connectivity of many Filipinos. “Our biggest hurdle in delivering consistently good internet (service) is the cumbersome number of permits and right of way issues that prevent us from building the last mile connectivity that would allow world class internet services to be enjoyed by the ordinary household or any person using a mobile phone. We have repeatedly called on the government to help address these issues that are prevalent at the local government level. Now with more people adopting to internet use much faster than the infrastructure can be built, then the problem gets exacerbated,” said Globe President & CEO Ernest Cu. Out of the Globe Telecom’s current bandwidth capacity of more than 16 Tbps, the company’s “lit-up” capacity is less than 3 Tbps as the rest of the bandwidth remain unused owing to insufficient last mile infrastructure. Bohol’s Open Governance model took center stage in this year’s ASIA PACIFIC LEADERS FORUM ON OPEN GOVERNMENT in Jakarta, Indonesia last December 14. The host country thru Indonesia’s Ministry of Planning invited Bohol Governor Edgar M. Chatto to speak on Sub National Open Governance and its impact to development taking the experience of Bohol province. Gov. Chatto’s name was among the list of nominated speakers evaluated by the organizing committee in Jakarta. His innovations in Open Government both in executive and legislative branches and the strong indorsement of the Philippine Government earned for him the slot to speak in the Forum attended by over 500 delegates from Asia Pacific countries. Also invited to speak in the Forum were DBM Secretary Ben Diokno, who spoke on Participatory Budgeting and COA Chairman Michael Aguinaldo who shared the Philippine experience in Transparency policies. Paje urges public to minimize trash during Undas Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje has called on Filipinos to avoid generating unnecessary waste and pollution as they troop to cemeteries to remember their departed loved ones this weekend. “Let us turn All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day into a more meaningful and memorable experience by minimizing waste and pollution in cemeteries,” Paje said. He warned that “small acts, whether negative or positive, when taken collectively can have such a drastic impact on the environment.” “It takes as little as using recyclable containers to contain your food, from candies to meals and drinks, to reduce the waste that is collected or otherwise end up in our waterways,” Paje pointed out. Citing a 2013 report by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Paje said that about a hundred truckloads of garbage were collected from various cemeteries in the nation’s capital region alone. As a friendly reminder, Paje urged those who will troop to cemeteries to bring only enough food to avoid wastage, use fresh flowers or potted plants without plastic wrappings, and not to leave their trash behind. The environment chief also encouraged cemetery administrators to set up enough strategically-located receptacles for different types of waste, and to strictly implement waste-related local ordinances like prohibiting the use of plastic bags. The Department of Tourism’s latest ads inviting tourists to the Philippines feature were run on CNN last week. The ad featured Bohol and its 1,776 hills famously called the Chocolate Hills. The ad is also on Youtube and was widely shared by netizens. Stakeholders of the Bohol tourism industry and the government sector are on an all out effort to bring back the number of tourists the province enjoyed prior to the decline of tourists after two major natural disasters last year. The whole country wants to attract at least 10 million by 2016. As of August 2014, the country had 3.2 million foreign tourists. In the DOT’s Visit Philippines 2015 campaign, there are five focus areas for tourism: business meetings; history and culture; lifestyle and entertainment; music and the arts; sports, adventure, and eco-tourism. Bohol tourism destinations can be categorized into most, if not all, of these areas. A new Facebook Page called “Behold Bohol” was recently created to help disseminate information about the new travel destinations of the province. To support the expected increase in volume of tourists, the Tagbilaran City Airport needs to accommodate more flights. Due to safety procedures, there can only be one airplane allowed on the airport at atny given time. Since this was implemented in 2012, the number of flights have been limited. The solution discussed in various forums with the Bohol governor Gov. Edgar M. Chatto is the apron at the airport which can be used as the space where multiple aircrafts can be accommodated to allow more flights into Bohol.
