DTI Announces Next Steps to Implement i3S

MAKATI – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) successfully conducted the Manufacturing Summit 2017 on 29 November 2017 at Fairmont Makati, bringing together more than 250 stakeholders from the private sector, industry associations, business chambers and stakeholders from the government and academic and research community. Taking off from the 2016 Manufacturing Summit, which focused on “Trabaho at Negosyo” for inclusive growth, this year’s Summit highlighted the remarkable performance of the manufacturing industry, the accomplishment of DTI’s Manufacturing Resurgence Program, and the country’s new industrial policy dubbed as Inclusive Innovation Industrial Strategy (i3S). The i3S aims to grow and develop globally competitive and innovative industries with innovation at the front and center of industrial policies and programs supported by pillars consisting of building new industries, clusters, and agglomeration. These will also ensure Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) growth and development, human resource development, and improving ease of doing business and the business environment. “With intense competition due to rising globalization, regional economic integration, and disruptive technologies, innovation is crucial for the inclusive and sustainable growth of the economy, particularly manufacturing,” said Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez. “Our vision is for the Philippines to have creative and connected communities of different stakeholders like innovators, start-ups, SMEs, and large enterprises that will collaborate to produce new products and services,” Sec. Lopez said. Moving forward, the Trade Chief indicated that DTI will focus on three major strategic actions: establish i3 zones or parks without walls, where universities and industrial hubs could work together and collaborate on innovation initiatives; using fiscal and non-fiscal support to promote local manufacturing of key products that are heavily imported like pharmaceutical products or... read more

Formal and Informal Surveys for President

By: Jerome Auza The last few weeks has been very interesting in the campaigns of the presidential candidates for the May 9, 2016 elections. Particularly interesting is the fact that formal surveys and informal surveys have widely contrasting results. In recent formal surveys, Poe is leading while in mock elections in different universities nationwide, as well as online surveys and even in “cup” surveys in a 24-hour convenience store show Duterte consistently in the lead. The cup survey is done using cups for drinks printed with the face and names of the different candidates. The Duterte cups always get out of stock. The formal surveys are conducted in a scientific method and the selection of respondents are done randomly in order to come up with results that are reliable and statistically representing the whole population. The mock elections and online surveys are non-scientific because for one, they can only cover a certain group of people. For example, university surveys would include only students. In online surveys, these include only those with Internet access. In other words, they may not really represent the sentiment of the whole population. However, there is the fact that the informal methods are done with a much larger sample of the population. In statistics, if you take a large enough sample, the tendency of the sample data is to match the whole sample. The mock elections held in universities are done nationwide, with sample size of around 1000 each or more. If you take into account that this is nationwide and the university students are obviously the youth, then it may be safe to say...

Miss Anda Wins Social Media Award in Miss Bohol 2014

A new award was given this year for the “Social Media Darling”, the candidate who is most popular on the official Facebook pages for each candidate and the official web page on the Bohol Sandugo Festival website. The selection of the winner was facilitated by Auza.Net’s social media specialists. Miss Anda, Allyson Mycee Escobia, was the most popular candidate on the social media with the most number of likes, shares and views. The final count was taken at 12:01PM on July 19, 2014. Hon. Antonio Ouano, Jr. and Jerome Auza of Auza.Net, gave the award to Miss Anda. The criteria agreed by the Miss Bohol 2014 committee for judging the award is 60% web page views and 40% Facebook likes and shares. The likes and shares are weighted as 20% each.  The criterial details are as follows: 60% – unique views of the candidate’s page in the official Bohol Sandugo Festival website (www.boholsandugofestival.com) 20%- LIKES in Miss Bohol 2014 official FB pages Miss Bohol 2014 Candidates album 20%- SHARES in Miss Bohol 2014 official FB pages Miss Bohol 2014 Candidates album The criteria is unique among other similar contests where only the likes are counted because it looks at three areas of “popularity” on the social media space instead of just likes.  Page views was given a higher weight because it means that people are really viewing the candidate’s page on the Sandugo website.  However, since the social media award is only a minor award, it had no bearing on the selection of the finalists. The results were interesting because there were three different candidates that topped each criteria....

Bohol tour guides receive training on Russian language and culture Bohol tour guides and some Bohol tourism officers will be receiving training on Russian language and culture this month of July as part of a joint project between the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Philippine Russian Business Assembly (PRBA). The lesson plan for the 2-week training was prepared by Ms. Zinaida Putapurchenko, the PRBA’s resident Russian language instructor. The same training on Russian language and culture has been given earlier this year to 11 tourism officers and 4 tour guides who are based in Cebu. The Honorary Russian Consul noted that there has been a steadily increasing awareness of the Philippines by Russian tourists. The Philippines is the closest tropical destination to Russia’s eastern part, which is only five hours away by airplane. Russian tourists, described as some of the top high-spenders among different nationalities visiting the Philippines, have been billed as an emerging tourist market in...
