PH gains membership in Int’l Halal Accreditation Forum.

PH gains membership in Int’l Halal Accreditation Forum. Positive developments await for the Philippine Halal industry as the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) formally signed on 6 December 2017 a full membership agreement with the International Halal Accreditation Forum (IHAF). Being a full member of the IHAF gives DTI-PAB voting rights at the General Assembly and committee meetings that could be highly beneficial to Philippine Halal industry.  This membership is also seen to further Halal trade between the Philippines and other IHAF member countries. The IHAF is an independent, non-government network of accreditation entities mandated to enforce Halal standards in their respective countries and regions. Empowered by its mandate to protect the growing number of Halal consumers and to facilitate international trade, IHAF establishes a solid ground for the global industry of Halal food and non-food products. Cultural mapping to lead way for new tour offerings in Neg Occ, Bohol

Cultural mapping to lead way for new tour offerings in NegOcc, Bohol “Sometimes, economic benefits of [aggregate] local cultural resources is higher than a building a new factory,” says Jeffrey Evenson, a Canadian Cultural Planning consultant leading coaching sessions in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Bohol this September. Around 60 government personnel together with local private sector will be trained on cultural mapping through a series of sessions to be held from September 17 to 20 in Negros Occidental and September 22 to 25 in Bohol. This activity is supported by the Local Governance Support Program for Local Economic Development (LGSP-LED) a program of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) that is funded by the Government of Canada. LGUs are aiming to create new tourism packages through the said workshops. However, according to Evenson, the approach and tool he will introduce can also serve as a framework for LGUs to later on map other assets such as transport, energy, agriculture, among others. The role of the LGU in LGSP-LED’s approach is to serve as a portal linking tourism assets together in such a way that it spurs inclusive growth. “Cultural heritage tour providers in Bohol, for example, may see the beaches in Panglao island as competitors for tourists,” said LGSP-LED Manager Randi Alampay. Through this innovation, however, LGUs and private sector alike will be able to see the linkages, opportunities between local assets and, together, take advantage of tourism growth. “What we really want is for LGUs to see this tool as an innovation and learn from the experiences of Canada,” said LGSP-LED Field Director Francis Gentoral. Both Negros Occidental and Bohol are pilot sites...

PCCI official statement on power supply shortage for dissemination to PCCI network

STATEMENT ON THE POWER SUPPLY SITUATION   The serious concern about power supply shortfall in Luzon in 2015-2016, a similar potential shortfall in the Visayas and the ongoing shortage in Mindanao is definitely a deafening sound for action, a deliberate one that does not need to raise the panic button among the public. This challenge we face now does not come as a surprise.  Over the last four to five years, the power supply and demand situation has been extensively presented and discussed in several consumers, business and government fora both, separately and jointly. With the supply shortfall escalating into brownouts in Luzon and finally putting everyone on the same page, we are calling for all stakeholders to act in unison in addressing the issue on hand. From the combined economic, industry, investment and even political view, there appears to be two (2) basic distinct critical periods or challenges to address – the 2015-16 period and post-2016 and forward. The first has to be confronted with basic “stop-gap” or “band-aiding” measures.  This situation is like a golf ball lying 6 inches from the hole.  It is a “give” situation and there is no need to tap it in, meaning any steps taken to cure, to bridge or aid the gap would be acceptable to all.  There is no need to declare a national emergency. The second is different because it must be addressed by way of a well-laid out plan that is shared with all stakeholders and which government could smoothly and competently implement through the grant of emergency powers to the President, if the plan would warrant the...
