DTI spotlights Central Visayas MSMEs at OTOP Premium Product Showcase

  The Department of Trade and Industry will demonstrate the massive potential of the grassroots level in Region 7’s food and non-food industries with the mounting of the One Town One Product (OTOP) Premium Product Showcase at the Paseo Solana, Ayala Center Cebu on November 17 – 19.   DTI Central Visayas Regional Director Asteria Caberte said the event will feature products of local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from Central Visayas that have undergone product development workshops conducted by the department under the OTOP Program.   Caberte added that MSMEs participating in the OTOP Premium Products Showcase will also supply products for the Go Lokal stores, Tindahang Pinoy, trade fairs and other market access platforms used by the DTI.   The DTI official explains that the current OTOP Program is a leveling up process that focuses on new variations, better products that have significant improvement in the areas of quality, design, standards, compliance, marketability and production quality.   Around 100 MSMEs in Central Visayas took part in the recent OTOP Next Gen Screening, Assessment and Triage (SAT) sessions in Cebu City  where experts from the Design Center of the Philippines and from the private sector evaluated potential OTOP products.   The One Town, One Product (OTOP) Philippines is a priority stimulus program for Micro and Small and Medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) as government’s customized intervention to drive inclusive local economic growth. ‘Reinvent globalization’, DTI chief to APEC ministers

    Da Nang, Vietnam – Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez called on the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies to focus on discussions and initiatives centered on promoting sustainable, innovative, and inclusive growth during the 29th APEC Ministerial Meeting on 8 November.   “It is our duty as ministers to reinvent the globalization model wherein progress and growth are extended to the bottom of the pyramid. This is the only way that we will be able to realize the Bogor Goals and usher APEC’s role beyond 2020,” said Sec. Lopez.   The DTI chief also highlighted the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and its development and internationalization in pushing inclusive economic growth and development.   As the Philippines’ (PH) trade minister, Sec. Lopez also expressed the country’s support for APEC’s programs in promoting green and sustainable MSMEs through the Green Economic Development. DTI leads Halal export promotion and dev’t

  THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as the lead agency in developing and promoting the Philippine halal industry, is set to implement initiatives toward the development of the country’s Halal exports highlighting its potential contribution in driving trade and investments in the country.   Speaking at the recent World Halal Assembly held in Manila last 18 and 19 January, DTI Trade and Investments Promotion Group Assistant Secretary Abdulgani M. Macatoman cited figures validating the need for the Philippines to get involved in halal export, import and production.   “Muslim population worldwide has been steadily growing at a 1.84 percent per annum. In 2016 Muslim population was at 2.14 billion, growing to 2.18 billion in 2017. At present, 32.43 percent of Asia’s current population of 1.4 billion is Muslim. In Africa, there are 635 million Muslims. World Muslim population translates to a $3.2- trillion halal industry worldwide. It is expected to increase to $10 trillion by 2030,” explained Assistant Secretary Macatoman.   He added, “the sheer size of underserved markets makes it easier to penetrate the industry. There are simply more people who need Halal products and services than there are existing businesses.”   At present, the Philippines only contributes five (5) percent of the global halal trade. The Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators – Region 7 holds the 8th Bohol IT Student Congress at the Alumni Educational Media Center at the Holy Name University on March 5, 2016. Ms. Amie Rosarie Cabalo, Dean of Computer Studies of Holy Name University, facilitated the activity which was attended by computer and IT students from the different universities and schools in the province. Bohol ICT Council Chairperson, Ms. Delilah Biliran, spoke to the students about the status of Bohol’s IT initiatives in order to attract BPO locators in Bohol. She updated the students on the government programs that will help improve IT competitiveness such as Tech4Ed and the scholarships that the students may avail at TESDA which cover certain skills in IT. She also discussed on freelancing as an option for employment. She encouraged the students to participate in the various competitions on technology startups and maker events. PNoy appoints a Boholano as new NBI director

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Jan. 17 (PIA)–President Benigno Aquino III has appointed Atty. Virgilio Mendez, a Boholano, as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). He was the NBI Deputy Director for Regional Operations Services (NBI-DDROS) before his appointment. Mendez took his oath before Justice Secretary Leila de Lima yesterday at the Department of Justice (DOJ). A native of Bayongan, San Miguel, Bohol, Mendez was born on March 5, 1952, to a farmer and a public school teacher. Mendez was one of the authors of the NBI Code of Conduct and Manual of Operations. He received commendations for the arrests of suspects in high-profile cases, including the Kristelle “Kae” Davantes murder and the fatal shooting of former Lingayen Vice Mayor Ramon Arcinue and his wife last year. He was also responsible for the solution of and the filing of charges in the bombing of an LRT train in Manila on Rizal Day in 2000. At first, he wanted to become a priest and finished his secondary education at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran City. However, Mendez instead gave in to the calling of being a “Padre de Pamilya.” He is married to Vilma Garcia and they have three children. Mendez went on to study law at Divine Word College in Tagbilaran City and earned a degree in 1976. He passed the bar with a grade of 81.55 percent in the same year. Filling of applications for April 6 career service written exams ongoing

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Jan. 17 (PIA)–The Civil Service Commission (CSC) Bohol Field Office is now accepting applications for the Career Service Professional and Sub-Professional Paper-and-Pencil Test to be conducted in Tagbilaran City on April 6, 2014, the first career service examination schedule for the year. Deadline for submission of application is on February 20, 2014. The CSE Professional level is a general ability test that aims to measure verbal, analytical and numerical abilities, while the Sub-Professional level aims to measure verbal, numerical and clerical skills. Both levels have general information questions on the Philippine Constitution, government work ethics (R.A. 6713), human rights issues and concepts, and environment management and protection. Passing grade is 80.00. Those who are interested to take the said examination may visit the CSC office at Circumferencial Road, Tagbilaran City. Applicants must bring 4 passport-size photos with handwritten (not computer-generated) full name tag in front with a signature over the name; P500 exam fee; and the original and photocopy of any valid ID containing the applicant’s clear picture, date of birth, and signature.
