4th Kapihan sa PTTC: Revolutionizing MSME education through Learning Management Systems

23 October 2017 –  The Internet has introduced improvements in technology, communication and online entertainment – a tool which transformed the way people communicate and information is disseminated – but it is also incredibly useful for education and training purposes as well. Its widespread use has unlocked a substantial amount of information and knowledge to a broader range of people.   The Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC)’s 4th Kapihan seminar held on October 23, 2017 focused on the recent advances and integration of Learning Management Systems, a software application to document, track, report, and deliver fully online educational courses or training programs.   A systems integration and application development company, ExcentOne CEO Dino Cavestany, centered discussion on the pros and cons of traditional education and eLearning.  PTTC Trade Industry and Development Analyst Joseph Argente was also on hand to discuss introduction to computer programming.   Without the limitations of a classroom, eLearning can accommodate any size where training modules are more personalized and targeted, tailored fit to the needs of its participants and can be accessed instantly from anywhere. Not all courses, however, can be offered online. Technical courses such as Accounting for new startup owners and non-accountants are examples of e-learning courses. Other areas of e-learning are content immediacy, universality, and continuity. The cost of installing an LMS is primarily based on the nature of the content.  Content that is hard to find is more expensive.   “When we talk about personalization, a lot of these e-learning sessions are more targeted in nature,” Cavestany said. “As opposed to, say, you go to school and you must take religion, social studies, math, science. PH exports to EU grew by 31%

MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) welcomed another milestone for Philippines (PH) and European Union (EU) trade relations as export products hit a 31% growth wherein EUR 2 billion-worth of PH products were exported through EU’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+). “We are pleased to hear of the significant increase of our exports entering the EU market through the GSP+. This trade preference has benefitted several communities in the Philippines and opened opportunities for our Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME). In the same manner, it has allowed our MSMEs to be more competitive in the local and foreign market,” said Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez. The 31% of total PH merchandise exports to the EU amounted to USD 8.4 billion in 2017. This made the EU the third largest export partner of PH. In the EU Trade Preferences Monitoring Report released on 19 January 2018, the robust trade relations between the two parties was highlighted with EUR 2 billion-worth of PH exports in 2017 benefitting from the GSP+ compared to the EUR 1.66 billion in 2016. A major increase was in food and agriculture exports such as animal products, fish and related products, prepared food, and edible fruits. Likewise, automotive parts, leather, textile, and footwear showed significant growth. Since the beginning of the preferential treatment in 2014, both PH and EU have enjoyed the mutual benefits of GSP+ by letting Filipino MSMEs participate in a bigger value chain and giving the EU market more options for their consumers. Local communities can take advantage of the export opportunities under the GSP+, like fishermen in General Santos and coconut...

Confessions of a Startup Weekend Participant

By Zion Campo So, curious about what Startup Weekend is? Want to know what happens during the three days of grueling days and nights. Here’s a little glimpse of what goes down during these three days from a participant himself:
In school, we typically run into situations where we are forced to finish a school project in a short span of time. To beat the deadline, you are thrown into a weekend overnight gathering with your projectmates trying desperately to finish your project before Monday. There is coffee, there are midnight shenanigans, good memories with friends and a whole lot of stuff that goes down over the weekend. But Startup Weekend is a lot more than that. You’re given 54 hours over the weekend to create something. From ideation to creation, Startup Weekend will up the stakes of your typical school weekend project overnight with a taste of startup drama! You will get to feel how your idea gets turned down because you’re awesome world changing idea wasn’t given any stars at all. You will get to experience being high in Cloud 9 because a lot of people love your idea and has been chosen as one of the ideas that get to pitch at the final pitching showdown! Then magically, over the weekend, you meet your team, yes, your A TEAM! Finally! You start working on the startup and then you get into problems. Your idea may not be viable after you try to validate the idea. You have a couple of choices, pivot your idea, overhaul your whole idea, or push it. After thinking over what is...

Phivolcs: Bohol will not sink; It is moving toward Cebu

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Dec. 05 (PIA)–There is no truth to allegations that Bohol will sink if the aftershocks will reach more than 6,000 as circulated thru text messages. However, part of Bohol, including Tagbilaran City, moved 55 centimeters toward Cebu. This was disclosed by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Dir. Renato Solidum Jr. during the Public Forum on Disasters, Climate Change and Marine Biodiversity held yesterday at JJ’s Seafood Village in Tagbilaran City. “Actually, the reason why Bohol is around is because of earthquakes and the faults that move vertically. Why? Because limestones are made up of corals and limestones cover a big part of Bohol,” Solidum explained. Solidum said the phenomenon was caused by the October 15 earthquake, but does not pose a risk to Bohol or Cebu. However, he urged Bohol leaders and residents to be better prepared. “Build back better,” Solidum urged Boholanos. Phivolcs recommends a distance of at least 5 meters on both sides of the active fault and avoid construction of any structure on top of an active fault trace to avoid ground rupture hazard. During the forum, Solidum said that it is not the earthquake itself that kills but the falling debris and landslides. The Phivolcs chief pointed out that design and construction are important factors to consider if a structure can withstand an earthquake of the same magnitude as the one on October 15. Phivolcs also clarified that the liquid that came out in a ground from Loon after the earthquake was a manifestation of liquefaction. Instead of worrying that Bohol island will sink, Phivolcs said the people should take...
