In a recent seminar co-organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the ASEAN Japan Center (AJC) entitled “Changing Trade and Investment Landscape in ASEAN and the Philippines”, DTI cited the importance of global value chains and non-equity mode (NEM) in the growth of Philippine exports. “NEM is of particular importance to the country given our participation to activities such as IT-BPO, international subcontracting, franchising and licensing among others,” said DTI Undersecretary Nora K. Terrado. Meanwhile, global value chains (GVCs) for international production translate to the different stages of the production process across different countries. This allows outsourcing and offshoring of activities of many multinational enterprises (MNEs). AJC Secretary General Masataka Fujita and Dr. Chie Iguchi from Keio University led the presentation of three (3) AJC-initiated papers namely, “Global Value Chains in ASEAN: A Regional Perspective”; “Global Value Chains in ASEAN: The Philippines”; and “Non-Equity Modes of Trade in ASEAN: The Philippines.” The papers provided valuable perspectives on the strategic importance of participation in global and regional value chains as Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states maximize opportunities and benefits of economic integration while recognizing differences in economic development and industrial policies, and the growing threat of protectionism. To further substantiate the initial findings in the said papers, interactive dialogues were conducted between AJC and a panel of discussants including Ambassador of Myanmar to the Philippines H.E. BFAR keeps fish supply mandate, Inaugurates 11th CFLC in Ubay
UBAY, Bohol, January 9 (PIA)—While legislators are busily tackling ways to bring down the price of fish in Bohol, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) kept to their mandate and inaugurates Bohol’s 11th fish hub, January 9 in Ubay town. The fish hub is a facility where fishermen can land their daily catch to be assured of a market, or at least refrigerate them so it does not go to waste and can be sold the following day. BFAR call these facilities Community Fish Landing Center (CFLC), and placed in them post-harvest facilities as well as spaces for trade, administration and at least a decent space for meetings and training. Earlier, fishermen have admitted that bringing their catch to the mainland is risky as there might not be a market for their fish and without refrigeration at home, their catch might stale and go to waste. On this, the BFAR intends to respond to that issue while noting that fisher-folk, including the entire fish trade value chain are registered and organized. The CFLC acts as their common venue to train, to organize and plan as well as to mend their nets, sell their catch and store them in shared facilities to maximize on the harvest, BFAR Regional Director Dr. Allan L. Poquita said. The Ubay CFLC is the 11th of the 14 multi-million facilities which Bohol got from the national government since 2016 to 2017. An afternoon of presentation and Q&A was held to spread awareness of online job opportunities, now ripe for the taking by students and new graduates. The show was led by tech entrepreneurs Jay Paul Aying and Ben Skelton. They expounded the variety of opportunities available. Writers, educators, engineers, artists, virtual assistants and programmers are among those in demand for online work. The earning potential is attractive, for instance those teaching English to Japanese students via video chat are commonly receiving 750PHP per day part time. The BICTC Team gave a practical how-to explaining where to go to find work online, how to make the difficult first steps and the kind of mindset to adopt to achieve success.
