Aris highpoints Bohol Polls ‘17

By JUNE S. BLANCO   WHAT is it in election years that pulls down net satisfaction ratings (NSRs) of candidates? This was what happened to three of Bohol’s incumbent top leaders in 2016 – except for Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) whose NSR increased by six percentage points. The three top leaders managed to recover in 2017. Gov. Edgardo Chatto and Rep. Rene Ralampagos (Bohol, 1st District) moved up by four percentage points each – from +81 to +85 for the former and from +50 to +54 for the latter. Rep. Arthur Yap (3rd District) fared better: +74 this year from +63 in 2016 or up by 11 percentage points. But Aumentado topped his six-point increase of +63 in 2015 to +69 in 2016 with a 15-point jump to +84 this year. While Chatto’s, Relampagos’ and Yap’s yearly ratings from 2014 to 2017 would look like the pulses of the heart in an electrocardiogram. Aumentados’s ratings steadily climbed, with no dips at all. Aumentado thanks his supporters for the trust and confidence in him. While he rode on the good name, accomplishments and popularity of his father and relished the sympathy votes when he first entered politics as replacement candidate and won in 2013, he said the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Bohol Poll results already reflect what his constituents feel about how he has gone about his work. To note, his namesake father, immediate congressional predecessor and former Gov. Erico Boyles Aumentado, passed away on Christmas Day of 2012 – at the height of the campaign. The solon said the 2017 results inspire him to strive even... read more

Cases of violence against women, girls decreasing!

TAGBILARAN CITY, December 8 (PIA)–Bohol Police Provincial Office reports a 52% dip in violence against women and children (VAWC) from January to November in 2017.   The downtrend is already considered huge accomplishment and records would also show that in 2016, VAWC cases reached 165 cases, according to a report read by Police Senior Inspector Nida Perocho.   Perocho, who came to the Kapihan sa PIA bringing a summative report on the vawc cases in Bohol also clarified that the cases in their records at Camp Dagohoy reflect only those getting into town blotters that prospered into legal suits.   As to the development, authorities continue to urge women and girls who might be victims of physical, sexual, emotional and psychological or economic abuse to come out where help is available.   It would only be when they come out from hiding that they can be helped, emphasizes Inspector Perocho.   And coming out may mean getting these cases known by legal suits.   One thing good about reporting these cases of abuse is that the perpetrators would have something to think about before committing another atrocity as he can really get to jail, added social worker Desiree Faith Lingo, at the radio forum.   By reporting and filing suits however, many women and girls fear they have nowhere to go.   A facility called Bohol Crisis Intervention Center here responds exactly to cases like that, volunteers BCIC’s Donna Belle Mante.   BCIC is designed as a temporary shelter and safe house for women and children who are victims of violence, where victims get to a support...

A KALAHI MCA feature… Mabini farmers tame Tabunok floods with 300 meter river dike

Rey Anthony Chiu MABINI, Bohol, July 21, 2012 (PIA) –Then, most farmers could only look helplessly as the floodwaters from the overflowing Tabunok River creep up and drown their rice crops. Now, armed with the participatory assessment skills, plus an engineering inspiration, they have high hopes that their efforts give them a good fighting chance against the notorious floods that has claimed several lives here. For most farmers, “tabunok” spells good harvest. Here, Tabunok is also fatal and destructive. Tabunok, a local term for rich loam deposits left after a flood, is what most farmers here capitalize to produce the harvest in the more that 150 hectares of rice and prime farmlands. The rich loam deposit, which the river brings, also causes the river to be called Tabunok. Tabunok River partly assures people of good harvest when it brings in the rich soil during its flow. And when the water is just a bit too much, the flow also portends death and destruction, when the collected rainwater from the grazing grounds upriver converge to wash down Cogtong Bay, said Barangay Chairman Rodrigo Vallespin. When that happens, he admits he could not sleep as he has to direct the barangay disaster council to effect the evacuations, knowing that the flooding may not only destroy crops. When the floods come, it would be in a flash, he said adding that a school girl crossing the ankle deep stream down river was suddenly washed out to sea when the raging water tumbled down. When the rains come at night, I could not sleep tight, knowing that down the village center, the water...
