Tagbilaran celebrates cityhood courtesy of  Erico Aumentado

By JUNE S. BLANCO     TAGBILARAN celebrated its 51st foundation anniversary as a city yesterday, Saturday, July 1. The small budding town attained cityhood on July 1, 1966, chartered by virtue of Republic Act No. 4660. Since then, the city steadily grew as can be gleaned from, among others, its budget. It started with a mere P600,000 in 1966, to P262,092,983 in 1994. This prompted Rep. Erico Boyles Aumentado of Bohol’s 2nd District to push for its cityhood during the first regular session of the tenth Congress. In his explanatory note in House Bill 2435, Aumentado said from the date of its conversion, the city “began to chart its own destiny and undertook measures to carve its own identity.” The date has long been remembered by the people as a day of heroism, valor and dignity because its founding was achieved with the sacrifices and aspirations of its people to attain cityhood, he continued. “The date marks also the awareness of the people  of their rich historical and cultural heritage, customs and traditions which they have developed all through these years from dawn of history, to the present, Aumentado observed. He added that the day has been enshrined in their hearts and celebrated with honor and dignity, the recollection of the historic blood compact between Datu Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, the first international treaty of friendship entered into by a local chieftain with a foreign power. All this considered, the solon said, it is fitting and proper that the people of Tagbilaran City be allowed to commemorate its founding, charter and attainment of... read more

Now, a perfect time to expand’— Lopez to IT-BMP players

TAGUIG—The government intensifies its support for the continuous development of the information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) industry, following the industry’s generated revenue of around US$23 billion and direct employment of 1.3 million last year.   Speaking at the office opening of financial institution ING Business Shared Services BV on 20 June, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez said that ING’s expansion comes at a perfect time when the Philippines is considered the global leader in IT-BPM, having an annual growth rate of 30% over a decade.   Sec. Lopez also mentioned that IT-BMP’s economic contributions surpass remittances of overseas Filipino workers, making the industry more competitive and growth-driven.   “The industry benefits from an enabling policy environment under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte. I encourage the IT-BMP industry players to continue expanding and specifically take advantage of this moment, when the Philippines is experiencing an economic breakout, as further intensified by efforts to improve ease of doing business,” he said.   The trade chief also highlighted that the country has a qualified, highly-trainable, hardworking work force, with notable English proficiency and fast learning curve.   “Filipinos’ adaptability to universal cultures and their high level of commitment and loyalty prove that the country’s greatest asset has always been its people, who will bring inclusive growth to the rest of the country,” he said.   Globally, the Philippines is competitively positioned in terms of talent, costs, and risks relative to established and emerging offshore destinations. Cities from Metro Manila to Clark, to the cities of Cebu, Davao, Santa Rosa, Bacolod, Iloilo, Dumaguete, and Baguio are listed in... read more

Facebook hits 1 Billion Users Logged in 24 hours

On Monday, August 24, 2015, Facebook hit one billion users logged within a 24 hour period. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement along with their new experiment called M, Facebook’s equivalent of Siri, the famous digital personal assistant on Apple devices. This one billion milestone is indeed a breakthrough by a company that changed how the world look at relationships. Facebook has also changed how we view privacy and this matter has remained controversial and users have to find the right balance between getting in touch and up to date with relatives and friends without revealing too much information that may be used by malicious persons. On a technical note, delivering a free service to a billion people in 24 hours requires computing and storage resources that are obviously massive. So how does Facebook earn money to pay for all these resources and manpower required to run this free service? Most of it is in advertising. One should realize that the users of Facebook are its product. The personal profile users provide in Facebook is a treasure trove for marketing people. Facebook can deliver ads targeted to a certain profile of users and thus have a high likelihood of success. For example, an advertisement for wedding services can be shown to women who are engaged. DILG urged LGUs to conduct dengue clean-up drive

IN a bid to prevent the spread of dengue cases in the country, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo on Wednesday called on all governors, city and municipal mayors, barangay chairmen, including local health officers to conduct clean-up activities in their respective localities. In a directive, Robredo enjoined local officials to conduct search and destroy operations of all potential breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitoes in their areas of jurisdiction. Local officials were also urged to enforce environmental sanitation such as dredging of clogged canals, esteros and other waterways; prune thick bushes or tree branches; remove or drain receptacles containing stagnant water; and conduct massive information drive on environmental control of breeding sites especially in endemic areas. Robredo issued the directive amid reports from the Department of Health (DOH) that dengue cases in the country, from January 1 to July 23, 2011, has reached to 38,876 or 25.85% lower compared to 52,428 cases in 2010. Also, this year’s recorded number of deaths is at 226, wherein victims are mostly children. He asked local chief executives (LCEs) to undertake the clean-up drive for two consecutive weekends: on August 20 & 21 and August 27 & 28, 2011 to stop the spread of the disease. Robredo ordered members of the DILG Regional Management Coordinating Committee to ensure that their field officers actively participate in the clean-up efforts within their areas of jurisdiction.
