PUBLIC CONSULTATION/HEARING ON THE GRANT OF BAGWIS AWARD AND RECOGNITION OF CONSUMER ORGANIZATIONS
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will conduct a public consultation/ hearing on the following: Draft Department Administrative Order (DAO) on the “Implementing Guidelines on the grant of BAGWIS AWARD to business establishments that uphold consumers’ rights and interests and practice business ethics”; Draft Department Administrative Order (DAO) on the “Guidelines on the Recognition of Consumer Organizations”, The consultation / hearing scheduled for the Visayas (Regions 6, 7, 8 and 9) is on May 9, 2017 at the Bayfront Hotel, Kaoshiung Street, North Reclamation Area, Cebu City. German delegation to participate in DTI SlingShot ASEAN event
Startup Asia Berlin (SUAB), the German-Asian startup platform that aims to enable the professionalization and direct cooperation between startup ecosystems of Berlin, Manila, Bangalore and Jakarta, will conduct its second Asian roadshow from 19 to 28 October 2017. For the Manila leg and SUAB’s first Asian stop, the 2017 roadshow delegates will be participating at Slingshot ASEAN on 20 October, where they will engage in panel discussions and workshops. Particularly, SUAB, in partnership with QBO and the UNDP, are spearheading the panel on social innovation – a discussion on how startups can create social impact. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through its representative office in Germany – the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC-Berlin), has been collaborating with Berlin Senate on various activities related to startup ecosystem development. The visit of DTI Undersecretary Nora K. Terrado to Berlin in March 2017 and the participation of DTI Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) Director Senen Perlada in the Asia Pacific Weeks Berlin in May 2017 facilitated the SUAB participation in Slingshot ASEAN. Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), spoke to students and IT enthusiasts at the University of the Philippines – Cebu City on March 28, 2015 about copyright issues on software. Stallman is the original author of GCC, the most popular compiler for the C programming language. GCC is the used to compile software that runs email servers, web servers, routers and many other systems on the Internet. Aside from his technical contributions, Stallman is also known for his advocacy “to promote computer user freedom and to defend the rights of all free software users”. The FSF provides critical infrastructure and funding for the GNU project, the foundation of the popular GNU/Linux family of free operating systems and the keystone of the Internet. In his talk, Stallman raised issue on the creeping loss of freedom to use software and other digital and non-digital works like art and literature. He also talked about the history of copyright and its original purpose which is for the good of the general public. At present, influential companies try to change the original purpose of copyright and subvert it to benefit the companies instead of the general public. One such example he gave as music. In the past, it was easy to share music: you just lend your CD to your friend. Now, with streaming music service, you cannot just lend the service to you friend because the service provider restricts it. COMELEC: No drug test for SK, Barangay bets
THERE will be no drug test required for candidates running in the coming back-to-manual Sangguniang Kabataan ang barangay elections on October 25, said Bohol Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Eliseo Labaria. The Comelec provincial boss issued the statement in an interview since no Comelec policy requiring candidates for drug test in the conduct of the elections and filing of the certificate of candidacy starting October 1, 2010. The Comelec will conduct the said elections back to manual or no more use of poll count optic scan (PCOS) machines. Atty. Labaria said that the Comelec has re-clustered the precinct composition of voters, reducing the number of voters to some 500 in 2 or 3 clustered precincts from a thousand lumping five precincts during the May 10, 2010 elections.
