PH startup bags up to $500,000 in equity investments

Acudeen Technologies, a startup that helps small and medium enterprises (SMEs) overcome financial constraints, recently bagged equity investments of up to $500,000 after besting other participants from over 66 countries in the SeedStars World Summit in Switzerland. Founded by a Filipino startup entrepreneur Mario Jordan “Magellan” Fetalino III, Acudeen Technologies is a financial-technology company that provides support for Philippine small businesses coping to make ends meet as they await payments from their clients. Financial stability is one of the top problems faced by most micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. While MSMEs acquire big contracts with larger companies, they find themselves financially disabled while they wait for their invoices to be paid that are usually in 30-60 day cycles. This scheme forces most MSMEs out of business. With this prevailing problem, Acudeen Technologies provides an innovative solution. It transforms SMEs’ invoices into cash through discounting of their receivables providing them with necessary working capital which they fail to get from banks. “This is an outstanding work of a Filipino entrepreneur which does not just boast of the innovative capacity of Filipino startups to provide solutions to existing problems, but also reflects the bayanihan spirit among Filipinos that continue to help our small businesses in the country to thrive,” said Department of Trade and Industry’s Trade and Investment Promotion Group Undersecretary Nora K. Terrado. “We hope to encourage more startups like this in furthering our innovative economy. We encourage them to avail various initiatives of the public and private sector such as the QBO Innovation Hub,” added Terrado. The Philippines, with increasing collaboration between the public and private... read more

No sail, no flight over Alona now in effect

TAGBILARAN CITY, April 21 (PIA)–In response to the regional task group managing the security for the meetings of the Association of South East Asian Nations 2017 (ASEAN 2017) in Bohol, marine task groups in Bohol are implementing a 500 meter no sail zone in front of the Alona stretch of beach.   The policy is in effect until the end of the ASEAN 2017 meetings in Panglao.   Seaman (SN1) Ralph Barajan, deputy chief of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Detachment in Panglao bared this as Bohol Task Group Commander PCSupt Noli Taliño earlier issued the “no sail, no flight” policy over Alona Beach.   This is to add up to the implemented security measures to protect the international and local delegates to the ASEAN trade meetings held at the Hennan Resort and some top level meetings at the Amorita Resort on the southeast end of the 1.5 kilometer stretch of beach.   “We are implementing a 500 meter from the coastline demarcation line for sail boats from the Amorita to Kalipayan Beach on the south west end, SN Barajan revealed.   The PCG elements are not the only ones making sure that navigation by any craft in the area is restricted.   Also there to help secure the sea area fronting the famed Alona stretch are the floating assets of the Philippine Navy and the Philippine National Police Maritime Group.   The Philippine Air Force is also tasked to insure that the airspace over Alona is cleared, PNP regional sources reported.   This too as the local government of Panglao implements the ordinance finally designating a one-stop... read more

PH emphasizes role of MSMEs for economic growth

The Philippines, through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), emphasized the role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as providers of employment and drivers of the country’s economic growth.   “The significance of micro small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as major economic drivers is beyond question. Their sheer number is overwhelming, as they account for 98% or more of all enterprises in most countries. Recent empirical studies show that MSMEs contribute to over 55% of GDP and over 65% of total employment in high-income countries,” DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya said before World Trade Organization (WTO) members called “Friends of MSMEs” at “The Case of MSMEs in Inclusive Trade For Sustainable Development in Geneva, Switzerland.   Maglaya explained that MSMEs are underrepresented in international trade in a globalised world.  But as a silverlining, there is a growing number of MSMEs who supply the export market either directly or indirectly by being involved in the production of parts and components for regional and global value chains serving large producers locally or abroad.   Maglaya added that when MSMEs do export, they contribute considerably to their country’s total GDP.   The DTI official also stressed the need to address the hurdles being faced by MSMEs in the international level. As a solution, the Philippines have pointed out several keys to help MSMEs hurdle these problems.   Maglaya pointed out the following steps being done by the Philippines such as providing access to innovation and technology, access to finance, access to skilled workers, and access to markets, particularly to export markets.   PH hosting of ASEAN   With Philippine chairmanship...

BICTC new set of officers accepts challenge to improve ranking among ICT Councils

By: Jerome Auza The latest ranking of ICT councils placed Bohol last among 42 other cities and provinces even with the efforts of the provincial government and the Bohol ICT council in the past years to influence the improvements in telco services, power situation and general readiness for ICT enabled services. The BICTC’s new set of officers, who were elected in March 4, 2015 during the general assembly held at the Panda Tea Suites conference room, accepted this news as a challenge going forward. The council has already recognized the challenges in Bohol as the province tries to be a destination of choice for BPOs. While Bohol is already connected via fiber optic cable to the domestic fiber optic networks of both Globe and PLDT, the so called last mile services, still needs a lot of improvement. Internet access service, in general, is not as reliable as users expect, even for business accounts. But Internet connection is not our only challenge. We have an issue on the reliability of our power supply. We are very dependent on the single link to the national grid in Leyte. This was painfully clear in November 2013 after typhoon Yolanda severely damaged the power infrastructure in Leyte and Bohol was plunged into extended blackouts. Until we have a second link to the national grid, perhaps going to Cebu, we have a single point of failure for our power supply. Or perhaps, Bohol should have its own power production capability, preferably from renewable sources. On the other hand, there is a thriving small and medium IT enterprises or SMITES in the province, making do...

Tech Talk: Gov. Chatto: Bohol ICT Industry Next Major Source of Jobs

Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto told attendees to the ICT Council Meeting that Bohol’s Information and Communications Technology or ICT industry will be the next major source of jobs for Boholanos. The meeting was held at the Governor’s mansion on September 17, 2010 and was attended by the representatives from PLDT and Globe Telecom, DepEd, BLCI, BWUI, BOHECO, DTI, Bankers Association, academe and the various ICT industry players. Ms. Emmelou Versoza-Delfin from the Commision on Information and Communications Technology reported that the top 10 New Wave Cities or cities that are potential locations for call centers and other business process outsourcing does not include Bohol yet. In the scorecard maintained by the CICT, Bohol scored 100% on cost of operations, but has a very poor 46% on manpower criteria. Surprisingly, Bohol scored on the high 70s for infrastructure and business activity and this was due to the presence of airport, seaports and the active business community represented by the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and the ICT Council. In the past years, government officials were not optimistic about the ICT industry due to the perceived requirement of a fiber optic connection from Bohol to Cebu. However, the officers from PLDT and Globe Telecom explained that the method of data transport is irrelevant because the telco companies will deliver the specifications based on the service level agreement or SLA and capacity using whatever data transport technology is used. The two telcos presented their current capabilities in Bohol. PLDT showed their multiple microwave links to Cebu and Dumaguete as well as their newly implemented ‘fiber in the loop’ interconnecting the various cell sites...
