Classical Music in Bohol’s Arts Month’s at Meridian

If only for some few hours, Boholanos sat and allowed themselves to be transported to the soothing classical music, as the Office of Governor’s Center for Culture and Arts Development (CCAD) and the local arts council brought in the biggest gathering of musical artists at the Meridian Hotel. Set in time for the National Arts Month, the Musical Tertulia, or the social gathering featured not just the well loved Bohol musical groups and individuals, it also put in two featured artists: a grade 12 multi-awarded pianist grandson of a Boholano and a professional violinist in most Italian classical orchestra. Billed as Uplifting Classical Music, the social gathering of musical artists centered on one genre of music: the classics, which most Boholanos are deprived of. “Classical music” as opposed to the baroque, is noted for its development of highly sophisticated instrumental musical forms, like the concerto, symphony and sonata and is distinguished for its use of sophisticated vocal and instrumental forms, such as opera. Classical music largely refers to the art music from the 1750s to the early 1820s, the same period when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven created ripples in the music world. And if you even wondered why doctors would recommend that would be mothers should listen to classical music, such is so because playing or listening to classical music can increase one’s creativity as music stimulates emotional and cognitive abilities, allowing the brain to think in new and different ways. The Bohol musical tertulia opened with RohmarBinibini playing Harold Arlen Harburg’sOver the Rainbow and followed by De Guzman-Buenaventura’s Mala-ala mo Kaya by soprano... read more

King of Kinatkatay test: 80 m to 618 m in 4 kms

A cranking assault that would take one from 80 meters to 618 meters in less than four kilometers is by far, the toughest climb that this year’s extreme cross country mountain bikers (XC MTB) strings as the hardest obstacle in this year’s 4th season of Kinatkatay sa Binabaje, 2019. And if one thinks this is a breeze, take note: this isn’t just any leisurely adventure spin with your trusted rig that you have to lay your bike aside for that mandatory picture after frantically summoning all your leg power reserves to surmount a technical climb. No, there is enough time to recover, but unfortunately, that does not happen inside the 30 kilometer race loop, as there would be equally aggressive bikers on the same trail eager to get this pain over and done with, fastest. For those who have not familiarized themselves with that track, the 80 meters to 618 in less than four kilometers is a good start. Now, think it over and over. Again. And for one, as the bikers crank from the starting line to kilometer 4 in frantic painful cadence to the break-away, be wary: it is one that would be taking the XC MTB riders from 0 to 300 meters, so expending on the reserves to gain a good headway may turn out to be a much more tiring effort. As to the downhill, the longest stretch which might be a good recovery section for the clearly screaming muscles would be at kilometer 20 when it goes from 618 feet to less than 50 feet in less than 4 kilometers too. But the downhill... read more

Aris stages 10th anti-drug concert

By JUNE S. BLANCO REP. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) will stage anew an anti-drug concert in Ubay town as one of its nightly entertainment in the rundown to the town fiesta. “Let’s eat, drink, have fun, enjoy music and be merry – all without drugs – this fiesta,” Aumentado exhorts the youth, the not-so-young and the young once as The Dawn, the rock band featuring singer-guitarist Jett Pangan and company, performs in the evening of Thursday, January 24, at the Magsaysay Gymnasium in Poblacion, Ubay. This is Aumentado’s 3rd concert as part of his campaign against drugs, and the 10th for the youth in his district. Listening to good music, the solon said, soothes the nerves, and relieves one of the day to day pressures of studies, work or other occupation. This can be enjoyed without drugs, as the latter can only destroy one’s health and brain, and can overhaul one’s personality to change the bright, courteous and humble into uncouth, foul-mouthed monsters. Rather than venturing into the unknown without knowing what kind of dragon one turns into when stoned, Aumentado pushes for a drug-free life, motivated to serve one’s fellowmen. He urges especially the Ubay youth and their peers and visitors, to come and enjoy the concert. Ubay has a soft spot in the solon’s heart as this is the hometown of his immediate congressional predecessor and namesake father, former Bohol governor Erico Boyles Aumentado who was born and raised in barangay...

End of days for traders selling  sanga disguised as pantihan

TAGBILARAN CITY, March 30 (PIA)—“Dili man ni sanga, pague man ni.” (This is not the meat of the banned manta, this is another kind.   By this thin line of excuse, traders of poached manta birostris better known in Bohol as sanga, sell the protected rare giant Atlantic manta ray meat in raw, dried or processed and easily get away with it.   Not anymore.   Starting next week, April 4, the lame excuse of selling manta meat because they are not from the biriostris kind stops as the whole country enforces a full ban on taking, possessing and transporting all big manta rays.   The Convention on International Treaties on Endangered Species (CITES), a 1973 international agreement between governments to protect endangered species of plants and animals from being extinct due to international trade and over harvest, has listed the manta ray as among its rare, endangered and species threatened to extinction.   The classification is also based on the International Union on the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as the manta birostris (Giant Manta Ray) along with the Manta Alfredi (Reef Manta Ray) also found in Bohol are being in the red list as vulnerable to extinction.   In the Philippines, Section 97 of the RA 8550 of the Fisheries Code of the Philippines states that it is unlawful to fish or take rare, threatened or endangered species as listed in the CITES and as determined by the Department.   Meanwhile, section 2 of Fisheries Administrative Order No 193 issued by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) prohibits the taking, catching, selling, purchasing, possessing,...

PROV’L GOV’T supports ‘Bold’ Women Power for Change

IT WAS IN the late 19th century when the International Council of Women (ICW), the first international women’s rights organization, was formed. Now, more than a century later, women’s rights organizations are still going strong; and women all over the world have chosen the Month of March as International Women’s Month and March 8 as International Women’s Day (IWD). In the Philippines, the designated month and day are the same as that of the IWD’s, given credence through Presidential Proclamation No. 227 series of 1998 and Republic Act 6949 series of 1990, respectively. As per Joint Memorandum No. 2017 by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Education (DepEd), this is to give recognition to the important role and contribution of women to Philippine society. This year’s theme is “Be Bold for Change.” To ensure a more meaningful and uniform observance of the 2017 Women’s Month here in Bohol, and in consonance with the Philippine Commission of Women and Women’s Month Celebration, Liza M. Quirog, Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Person and SEEM Cluster Head of the PGBh, informed all concerned that the PGBh, through Gov. Edgar M. Chatto, is strongly supporting the advocacy with the theme, “We Make Change Work for Women.” The same memo enjoins all local chief executives to conduct simultaneous and synchronized activities mentioned therein. These are the conduct of a Female-led Fun Run (Run for a Cause) last March 8 at 5:00 in the morning; immediately followed by a Zumbabae for All (Zumba). A three-day rummage sale...

Rep. Aris: Plant more guso, produce guso-based foods

By JUNE S. BLANCO GUSO crackers, anyone? How about some guso noodles? Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado’s (Bohol, 2nd District) said many products from guso or the edible carrageenan-rich seaweeds abundant in the shallow waters of northern Bohol towns are waiting to be developed. On top of supporting the planting itself as his constituents’ livelihood, the solon said he will also support those who will venture into processing the seaweeds harvest into crackers and noodles. Aumentado vowed to bring the technology to his district. He said the idea was well-received by his constituents when he first broached it to them. On the “how” part, the solon said he will bring in the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for more training on planting and securing the planting materials. He will bring in the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to cover questions on the processing part, the actual cooking and packaging, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the marketing side. He wants the new products to be marketed not only in Bohol but to other provinces and even outside of the country in light of the ASEAN economic integration. The novel and exotic products, he said, will bolster Bohol’s position in the tourism map. He expressed confidence that soon, buyers from all over the world will be looking for the items on the shelves. In effect, he explained, the convergence of BFAR, DOST and DTI in his first attempt at branding Bohol will up the province’s eco-tourism attractions. When the project goes full blast, Aumentado said Bohol’s eco-tourism will sell not only for the tarsier, the...
