ABATAN VILLAGE CENTER, CORTES, February 22 (PIA)—Over 600 volunteers from about 40 groups: trooped to the river sides of Abatan and Bacong rivers in Cortes, Maribojoc and Balilihan Friday, February 22, with one common goal: lend their hands to help clean up the river and improve its water quality. Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Charlie E. Fabre said he has seen the potential source of pollutants in the river and would meet river stakeholders to discuss on mitigating measures and possible adoption of river sections that have been affected by pollution. PENRO Fabre, along with Abatan River Community Development Management Council consultant Emilia Roslinda, Participatory Research Organization of Communities and Education towards Struggle for Self Reliance (PROCESS) Bohol Executive Director Aurelio Salgados Jr., Bohol Environment Management Office (BEMO) Coastal Resource Management Coordinator Maria Villa Inguito-Pelindingue, private corporation representatives and local media, on a flatboat, ventured into the headwaters of Bacong River to inspect the tributary to the Abatan. Abatan River has been among the three rivers which the regional DENR committee identified for the Recognizing Individuals and Institutions towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers (RIVERS) for Life Awards in 2019. Aside from Abatan River, also identified in Bohol are Wahig River in Inabanga and Manaba River in Garcia-Hernandez. Aris OK’s nuclear energy only after thorough study
By JUNE S. BLANCO REP. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd district) favors the use of nuclear energy – but only after a thorough study. Aumentado aired this position during a recent meeting with House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The solon expressed his support for the bill proposing to use nuclear energy provided that all safety measures are put in place. He said a thorough study must be made by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Energy (DOE) on the nuclear power models of the United States and Japan, among others, before attempting to repair, retrofit and use the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. On the local scene, he observed, power in Bohol is getting expensive. He said this is because of the strides in infrastructure development brought on by President Rodrigo Duterte’s thrust of “build, build, build”. Bohol still depends to a large extent on power from Cebu. But, Aumentado said, this may not be for long because Cebu’s power demand is also increasing – at a rate bigger than Bohol – the former being already industrialized. The price of power will inevitably become more and more expensive, he said. The Philippines’ chance of finding sustainable and stable energy comes in nuclear power, he continued. However, Aumentado warned, while DOST may be supportive of nuclear power, it should not push to the back burner the concerns on the environment. Development of nuclear power must be consistent, especially with the province’s goal of protecting the environment and the lives of the people. TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol May 12 (PIA)—Jumpstarting to prop up Bohol’s inventory of trained technical persons who can support to rural communities in their development efforts, the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) in coordination with allied offices, dangle a free technical training to at least upgrade to technical grade skills held by young Boholanos. The DICT is looking for trainees in the Rural Impact Sourcing Technical Training; a 12-day digital marketing and electronic commerce course, running from May 21- and in the Saturdays and Sundays until July 27, this year in Tagbilaran City. The technical training that can provide digital opportunities in the countryside by equipping trainees who have good communication and with basic information technology skills, the edge in digital marketing and electronic commerce, according to Edilberto Aquino Jr., sharing this information during the monthly meeting of information officers in Bohol. During the same gathering at the Panda Tea Garden Resort, Aquino, who came with another DICT staff said the training includes training modules for branding for companies products and services, web development, product photography content writing, customer relationship management and email follow through. Also included in the technical training modules are data privacy and cybercrime law and digital marketing ethics, search engine optimization and email marketing, social media content creation, social media planning and calendar, business blogging, and building a freelance profile. EcoFISH bows out, fishermen groups commit to push EAFM
TAGBILARAN CITY, April 27, (PIA)–A fishery resource management program implemented among the municipalities sharing the Danajon Double Barrier Reef (DBR) in Bohol closes its project but not after making milestones in community empowerment for fisheries management towards poverty alleviation. Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (EcoFISH), with Department of Agriculture Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the representatives of the United States Agency for international Development (USAID) received statement of commitments from people’s organizations in their assisted sites. The statements of commitment from eight people’s organizations of fishermen declare that a sustainable protection and conservation of their marine resources is important in maintaining the well being of their communities. Mocaboc Island Fishers Association, Entrepreneurs Association for Sustainable Economic Development (EASED) of Alumar Island in Getafe (seaweeds production and marketing enterprise), EASED in Asinan, Buenavista (seaweeds pickle production and marketing enterprise), EASED in Jandayan Getafe (seaweeds nursery, production and marketing enterprise), Bansan Islands Seaweed Farmers and Fisherman’s Association, Bagacay Seaweeds Farmers Association of Sag, Talibon, Bagacay Seaweeds Farmers Association of Bagacay Talibon, Bilang-bilangan Daku Women’s Association (BIDAWA) of Bilangbilangan island, Bien Unido, Union Farmers and Fisherfolks Organization all said they would implement the EcoFISH concept of ecosystems approaches to fisheries management (EAFM).
