Space agency bill goes to plenary
By JUNE S. BLANCO HOUSE Science and Technology Committee Chair Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol 2nd District) will submit to plenary shortly the bill proposing the creation of a space agency. Aumentado emphasized that it is high time that the Philippines upgrades its technology. One such leap would be by launching satellites into space to better communicate information to the people. The solon said the agency would be under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). He said on top of information gathering, satellites can also be a peace and order tool. He said they can best be maximized in surveillance activities as they can easily track the movements of people with suspicious activities. Satellites can locate suspects with surgical accuracy, he said. Aumentado expressed confidence that the bill will be approved in the plenary because it already has the backing of many of his colleagues. GOVERNMENT troopers showed its left hand working for peace when hundreds of people from Loboc and Loon benefited from the military’s Medical and Dental Civic Action Programs (MEDCAPs) organized last May 31 and June 1. In Bohol, after relatively successful in its anti-insurgency drive with forceful combat operations, the army now shifted more of its operations to civil and military in form. The activity, jointly conducted by the 802nd Infantry (PEERLESS) Brigade under Col Alan R Luga and the Technical Service Brigade (Reserve) of the AFP Reserve Command under Col Joseph G Sevilla visited Gotozon in Loboc and Napo in Loon the following day. Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan underscored the army’s full commitment to humanity by assisting local government units in attending to the needs and problems of the people in the community through community works, humanitarian and medical missions. On this, 802nd Brigade Civil-military operations officer Maj. Eduardo Malig-on assured that the Army partners not only for peace but also for progress and development. In Loboc, more than 300 residents availed of the services carried on not just by military medics and dentists but with the Loboc Health Office, PNRC-Bohol, the Provincial Health Office and the Philippine Gift of Life Foundation, Representative Adam Relson Jala and Santa Clara Industries. In Loon, about 400 residents benefited from the services rendered by the same group with the Congressman Natalio Castillo Memorial Hospital medical practitioners and the group who earlier did the MeDCAP services in Loboc. ACTING Governor Julius Caesar Herrera is now asking concerned Boholanos to report the whereabouts of a Boholana who may be unknowingly spreading swine flu infection now. The possible carrier who may not have followed the self-quarantine procedures implemented for persons who entered the country during the reported swine flu outbreak went to a party recently. She has been at large and is freely moving about, following a few days of hospital treatment regimen at a hospital in the city, and Herrera wants the possible carrier to be contained as soon. Herrera hinted that the patient could be spreading the virus, which can be transmitted by physical contact and the danger spreads daily with the patient freely moving. Herrera, who sits at the Capitol top post for the governor who is on official state visit said he received reports baring that the regional health authorities have learned of the positive tests conducted by the Regional Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) for the OFW Boholana patient. The overseas foreign worker patient reportedly came from Qatar and went home last May 24. She later complained of fever and has to be admitted at the Borja Clinic where, Herrera said, she underwent tests and had her laboratory samples taken to the Alabang Institute for test confirmation. The patient whose name is currently withheld, gave out her address as upper JA Clarin St. in Tagbilaran City and Koinonia Hill in Sungcolan Dauis.
