BSP, open to the idea of locating in Panglao

TAGBILARAN CITY, December 13 (PIA)–The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is open to the idea of locating in Panglao its Bohol branch if no property areas in Tagbilaran City meet its strict requirements. This was revealed by Bank Officer Hazel Cultura to the members of the Association of United Development Information Officers in Bohol (AUDIO-Bohol) during their General Assembly Meeting hosted by BSP last December 8, 2016 at JJ’s Seafood Village, this city. Cultura said Central Bank is eager to construct the structure next year or as soon as the most appropriate site, which can also be within the city, is identified, cleared and approved. Eitherin the tourist town of Panglao, where the new Bohol airport is currently constructed, or its neighbor town of Dauis offers an ideal site, Cultura said. The lot area for the facility should be at least 5,000 square meters along a major road network or, in areas where there are no other suitable sites, the frontage of the lot should not be less than 50 meters. There was then a potential site but the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) advised BSP to find another because of geological hazard following Bohol’s 7.2 magnitude earthquake on 2013. While a most ideal site is yet to be fixed, Cultura said interested landowners may contact the Bohol Provincial Government to have a direct access to BSP authorities who are in charge of the project. The Central Bank in Bohol will further result in a better quality of banknotes and coins in circulation and easier access for the Boholanos to exchange... read more

ABAC Philippines to focus on MSMEs in pursuing inclusive growth agenda

7 June 2017 – MSME Development. This is the main thrust of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Philippines as itpresented the priority work areas in the meeting with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez following the second ABAC meeting for 2017 last 25-29 April in Seoul, Korea. “This is a very welcome development and a boost to the MSMEs that comprise 99.5% of the establishments in the country,” said Sec. Lopez. “The DTI has already been laying the ground work for strengthening MSMEs, especially with the participation of the youth and women. Now as we chair ASEAN this 2017, we likewise put the spotlight on MSMEs and entrepreneurship, as well as the sector’s integration in the global value chains.” APEC Philippines, through DTI, is working on the development of an APEC SME Marketplace as a one-stop shop for SMEs in the region. This online portal is envisioned to provide useful information such as the MSME policies and regimes in different economies. Ultimately, the project aims to serve as a platform for SMEs to access and tap into global markets and transact with other players in the region. According to ABAC Philippines Chair Tomas Alcantara, it is important to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure that SMEs in the country will optimize use and benefit from the system. “ABAC PH’s first project will help advance MSMEs interests by developing a pilot Philippine SME Marketplace. We are trying to make concrete outcomes by facilitating linkages between SMEs and domestic market first, then to two or more international markets. After that to ASEAN, eventually to APEC, and then finally, the global market.” With the very broad and varying interests of...

Boholanos give PGMA +3 satisfaction rating

DESPITE negative publicity and criticisms against the administration, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (PGMA) reaps a total +3 satisfaction rating in Bohol, well above her –3 rating last year, the 13th round of Bohol Polls says. During a public presentation at the Holy Name University (HNU) High School Multi-Media Center in Janseen Heights Dampas, the Bohol Polls 2009 revealed too that PGMA has 100% awareness rating and Bohol’s third district gave her the highest satisfaction rating at +12. About 49% of Boholanos in the third District here were satisfied with the President, over 37% who were dissatisfied, resulting in a net rating of +12. Observers believe that the recent administration’s Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) and the visibility of Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Arthur Yap who is concurrently the cabinet steward for employment in the Visayas in the widely agricultural District affected the president’s satisfaction rating. Sec Yap is currently implementing CLEEP programs in agriculture and is on a government spending spree to generate as much employment to keep people above water in this time of economic grip. With about 23% of Boholanos engaged in agriculture and allied jobs, the government reaped very high ratings in ensuring adequate food supply at +26 points and providing support for agriculture promotion at +20 points. In Bohol’s District 2, 41% are satisfied with PGMA while some 39% were dissatisfied resulting in a +2 rating. On the other hand, in Tagbilaran City of Bohol’s First district, 3 of every 10 were satisfied over 5 who are dissatisfied resulting in her lowest rating at –18. The survey coordinators however clarified that they...

Mayor ready to demolish if resort owners will not

Panglao Mayor Benedicto Alcala is now ready to demolish,by the end of May, structures within the 20-meter salvage zone of the Alona Beach if the resort owners will not voluntarily do so. The Panglao mayor has already sent the notices sent by registered mail with return card to the 12 resorts owners on the Alona Beach. He has negotiated, cajoled, requested, reminded and directed these owners to demolish these structures but to no avail. This issue cropped up during the meeting after resort owners aired the complaints of some guests that the trek to the beach through the public access is so cumbersome and circuitous. Beachfront owners used to provide access through their property but cut this short after passersby abused the privilege – stepping out of the path and onto the grass, loitering around guests’ rooms to the latter’s surprise and fear in some cases, and dropping litter. Other resorts also have guards, but they do not deny entry but merely remind passersby to stay within the easement zone and not too close to the property. Click here for full...

Swertres raid nabs city barangay chief

Despite criticisms for the failed capture of the “big fish” of the illegal game swertres, regional police operatives arrested a city barangay captain last Friday. The brgy. Captain, Manolo Blanco of Mansasa District, is identified as a “big time” financier operating all over the province. A joint team from the intelligence branch of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7) and the Bohol PNP seized cash amounting P586,715. The team were composed of S/Supt. Melvin Ramon Buenafe and selected operatives of the Bohol Police Provincial Office (BPPO) led by S/Supt. Edgardo Ingking. Blanco is said to be the biggest financier of the illegal numbers game in the province operating through networks in several towns with well structured coordinators particularly operating in the city. The raid is considered to be the biggest success so far for PRO-7 after Regional Director C/Supt. Federico Terte ordered a region-wide crackdown against swertres. Arnel Pablo,of Matig-a Street this city, was also nabbed at Blanco’s residence. He is one of the coordinators. Blanco will be charged for violating RA 9287, the law governing illegal numbers game, and could face stiffer penalties being an elected public official. Under Sec. 5 of RA 9287, a government employee or public official caught as a financier or operator of illegal numbers game shall be meted the penalty of 12 to 20 years in prison and a fine ranging from P3 million to P5 million. Guv goes for 3-lanes on airport highways

ARMED with the solomonic formula Governor Erico Aumentado is fast becoming noted of, Bohol local officials here think the opposition forming to delay the road widening project for Panglao Airport access would soon be convinced to lie low. The government road-widening project in preparation for the Panglao air facility whipped a potential headache recently for local officials who are pushing for the realization of the dream air facility. Government public works authorities have proposed a four-lanes in lieu of the present two lanes to keep future traffic from potential bottlenecks. Such a move however would require an additional road space for the main road and its shoulders, and may cause dislocation among private residents who have developed areas by the roadsides. Residents of Dauis and Panglao towns however believe they would end up losing precious front yards or worse, their houses and developments when the proposed 4-lane road starts. Preempting any of this scenario, residents have started organizing to lobby for a 2-lane instead of a 4 lane road project. Feeling for residents’ plight too, Gov, Aumentado shared Friday that he has presented his compromise formula to the DPWH and the government agency has vowed to study his proposal. The governor explained that he has presented to DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane and Undersecretary Manuel Bonoan his proposal. The Aumentado proposal is for the government to adopt a Subic-Clark Expressway-like highway which totals 9.1 meters of road development. He said the design would be 6.1 meters of main roads for three lanes and 1.6 meters of road shoulders on both sides. Interacting with the local media during the weekly Governor’s...

Town restaurant opens 26 student job chances

LOCAL local officials see the hiring of 26 students for a restaurant here as starting countless job opportunities for Catigbianons in this time of financial grip. Both Mayor Roberto Salinas and Vice Mayor Necita Digaum agree that the ripple effects in the opening of Katigbawan Resto would definitely affect the town’s economic base and raise household incomes better. The officials said this in time for the semi-hiring of 26 students who could also pick up food handling training that could land them jobs in the future. Salinas, who admits he also shares a poor past said the students hired on a shifting basis would complement a regular restaurant staff of 6 and would be paid on hourly rates patterned after major food chains in the country. On the process, they too earn enough to pay for their fares to school, and a little extra to possibly prop up family’s income by unburdening parents of daily expense needs, Salinas said. During the opening, restaurant manager Jocelyn Angcahan said that they patterned their hiring scheme with that on big-time fastfood chains by allowing students time for work and yet keeping them in school. The student waiters wear custom printed yellow with green collar and trim polo shirts, the traditional Catigbian green caps, black pants and leather shoes. They also stuck like sore thumb in an air-conditioned restaurant with function rooms and amenities in a largely agricultural town about 30 kilometers from the city. The students, she said would be scheduled for duty after their school hours and would be rotated on a shifting basis, well enough to keep them off work...
