Rediscovering Bohol: The Heart of the Visayas

From our rolling Chocolate Hills to the sandy white beaches of the islands that surround us, Bohol is one of the Philippines’ most visited destinations but despite its popularity, it’s charm still remains. Adventurers and avid divers often make their way over here to explore the underwater majesty of the Panglao Islands and for nature lovers in pursuit of rest and relaxation, both are often found amidst the lush scenery of Loboc River. So whether you’re a visitor looking to experience the many attractions that Bohol has to offer or a local keen on rediscovering its sights and sounds, here’s a list of some of our favourite things about Bohol. The Natural Wonders Bohol boasts a relatively small but diverse natural landscape that is beautifully preserved. Beach bums will find their calling in the island of Panglao which boasts the popular and nightlife friendly Alona Beach, Dumaluan Beach with its swanky resorts and finally, Libaong White Beach, 3km of tranquil shores, crystal clear waters and shady palm trees. For those who gravitate more towards the calling of the wild, Bohol’s Chocolate Hills sit high atop the list but don’t overlook the man-made forest with its towering mahogany trees, Mag-Aso Falls and the cool and hidden turquoise pool nestled within a cave at Inambacan Falls. The Numerous Activities While it is very much a serene little province, there’s plenty to do here in Bohol, especially if you love outdoorsy activities. Birdwatching is a favourite hobby and people often travel to Olango Island to catch a glimpse of its rare inhabitants such as the Philippine Eagle Owl. The laid-back river cruise at... read more

Police unsure what happens if drug-freed area yields suspect

CORTES, Bohol, November 19, (PIA)—What happens when a place declared freed from the torment of drugs, yielded a drug personality not long after? A police official said that should be a case for the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to decide. But he is unsure. Asked the big poser at the Kapihan sa PIA, Camp Dagohoy’s Police Community Relations Officer SPO4 Quinciano Lopena did not fail to mention other possibilities. “It could mar the name of the Barangay leaders who issued the certification that their areas are already freed. And the DILG has standing policies on the acts of local government officials,” he added. Refusing to give a statement, Lopena, unlike other publicity hungry officials, did not immerse himself in a potential controversy with an answer he obviously could not authoritatively give. Last week, Dimiao town declared itself freed from the drugs issue. There was not much of a word however how that was processed until its declaration. “It must be the DILG because the police can only ask the BADAC and MADAC for the names of those who still are into drugs,” Lopena reiterates when asked who put up the parameters for clearing these drug affected towns. Over the matter, Lopena also clarified that there is so much risk involved. “If you happen to hear the phrase “newly identified,” these are drug personalities who have decided to transfer their operations because their former areas have become hot,” Lopena said. “When they are caught, then they are the newly identified personalities now tagged to the area,” Lopena continued. If you happen to have somebody new and if... read more

Usec. Parras absolves Yap in ‘another fertilizer scam’

Undersecretary Emmanuel Parras denied the claims alleged by a national daily columnist that Yap is involved in another fertilizer scam and it involves Chinese Filipino businessmen and fertilizer dealers. Parras initially clarified that Yap came after the controversial fertilizer scam and could not be involved in it. He says that it is unlikely for the Department of Agriculture (DA) to be involved in the alleged fertilizer scam when there is a government procurement process being followed and that the department is not having any hand in getting its supplies and materials now. Parras adds that the DA, under Yap, is not even giving out fertilizers but discount coupons. The newspaper article also questioned why DA Sec. Yap is always visible in Bohol, especially in the third congressional district where he is rumored to run. (rachiu/PIA) Click here for full...

American Tourist Signs Up For His 2nd TBTK Attendance

To those who have visited the tbtk.org website, the 3,000 colored pictures posted during the 2006 TBTK Global Homecoming were taken not by a Boholano, but by an American tourist. One of the many foreign tourists invited by our TBTK Chairperson, Betty Veloso-Garcia, to come to Bohol, Philippines for the two-week festivities, three years ago. As the cliché goes that pictures tell their story, ergo, the past 2006 TBTK celebration can be fittingly described only in one line statement – A Grand Success. Where everybody had a good time. Happy together. To return home after having been away for sometime. To meet long lost friends, relatives and the Boholano folks whom they have not seen for quite a while. The sheer enjoyment, the fellowship, the laughter reverberating everywhere, can’t be quantified and much more, not be valued with in terms of peso or dollar sign. Be that as it may, we Boholanos owe much from our American friend for leaving us one treasured album, pro-bono or free of charge. It chronicled the sequence of events unfolding: From the arrival of Boholano balikbayan delegates in the nation’s capital of Manila on Day One, up to its culmination date in Tagbilaran City,Bohol, where lined-up activities and unscheduled happenings were almost non-stop. Time flies so swiftly. Before we know it, another global homecoming among overseas and expatriate Boholanos is in the offing this year 2009. It is envisioned to be larger in participation, far more elaborate in its pomp, pageantry and revelry. The preparations are now feverish, as the countdown begins for the July TBTK schedule. While our campaign promotions encourage early...

Sewage lines opened

The sewage drainage that was closed due to the efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Gov. Erico Aumentado last December, has been reopened. Without warning and acting on orders from City Hall, city engineers Pianicita Castolo and Servando Acedo supervised the unplugging of sewer connections along intersections at CPG Avenue and B. Inting, M.H. Del Pilar and G. Visarra Streets Monday night. During the past week, the public had complained regarding the foul odor coming from overflowing fluid at the aforementioned intersections. The city engineers suspected the plugged drainage in these intersections have caused the underground culverts to burst spilling filthy water on the highway. Click here for full...
