DTI, MSMED Council to accelerate 7Ms for MSME Development

Empowering and enabling small businesses are a priority of the administration’s economic development agenda since President Rodrigo Roa Duterte assumed office in 2016. In support of the President’s commitment to the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, the MSME Development Council (MSMEDC), through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) as MSMEDC Chair, is staging once again the National MSME Summit 2018 on 10 July 2018 at the ASEAN Convention Center located at the Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga. “This Summit will be a venue for our MSMEs, the backbone of the Philippine economy, to become more innovative and competitive in their businesses. With the continued support from both government and private sectors, we are enabling MSMEs and generating inclusive growth,” DTI Secretary and MSME Development Council Chair Ramon M. Lopez said. With the theme “Accelerating 7Ms for Competitive MSMEs,” the Summit will present various opportunities and initiatives in gearing up for MSME competitiveness under the 7Ms framework which was introduced and supported by the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) on 14 July 2017, in line with the country’s hosting of ASEAN. The 2017 ASEAN Summit has issued the Manila Call to Action (MCA) for MSME Development, carrying a more MSME-centric perspective with its 7-point framework aligned to the following elements of an entrepreneur’s journey, known as the 7Ms – Mindset Change, Mastery, Mentoring, Money, Machine,  Market Access, and Models of Business. Philippine cacao draws interest from Swiss chocolatiers

Geneva, Switzerland – Department of Trade and Industry’s Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) – Geneva tested the cadmium level of Philippine cacao beans and the results are encouraging!   “Davao-sourced fermented cacao beans have low cadmium level that is well within the acceptable values, providing a big opportunity for Filipino cacao farmers,” said Michiel Hendriksz, Executive Director of FarmStrong Foundation.   The test was made in light of the European Union’s (EU) new limits on the cadmium levels in cocoa products by 1 January 2019 (EU No 488/2014) that could pose a serious threat to many smallholder cacao farmers, and present a challenge to chocolate producers.   “While Switzerland is not part of the EU, it adopts the EU General Food Law and exports majority of its chocolate production to the EU. Swiss consumers also have the highest per capita rate of chocolate consumption worldwide,” according to Mr Jean-Benoit Charrin, Director of Operations of FarmStrong Foundation.   Cadmium is a heavy metal found both through natural occurrence and from industrial and agricultural resources. The maximum levels for cadmium in food have existed in EU legislation since 2001. Thus, to reduce exposure levels to the metal in certain food groups where exposure is highest or where the consumer groups were most vulnerable, new recommendations for maximum exposure levels in a range of infant products and cocoa-based products were released. Three maximum levels have been set for chocolate, where the strictest maximum levels apply to chocolate varieties most eaten by children, while a maximum level is also set for cocoa powder destined for direct consumption.   Cacao beans from Latin America are...

Bohol slides to fourth From 3rd place in 2016

TAGBILARAN CITY, February 18 (PIA)—Bohol lost steam and sizzled as it slid to fourth among 13 sports delegations towards the closing days of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet held February 12-17, 2017 at the Teodoro Mendiola Sr Oval in Naga City. On the second day of competitions, Bohol took a commanding second place, its athletes achievements even earning precious newspaper spaces all over Central Visayas but could not hold on to its edge. Medal powerhouse Cebu City kept its 2016 lead and cemented a 25th straight winning streak for the CVRAA crown with 144 gold medals, 64 silvers and 77 bronze medals. Observers always pick Cebu City as favorite, being the host of most schools with well-defined sports programs. Cebu Province, which finished fourth overall in 2016 improved its position by skipping over two positions to trample then third placer Bohol and second placer Mandaue City to claim a spot as the region’s next delegation with the most medals. Cebu Province nailed 37 gold medals, 41 silvers and 47 bronze medals to sidle in between Cebu City and next bigger contender Mandaue City. On day three of the sports competitions, Bohol could not keep up with the gold harvest and settled for third, a position it continues to lose grip to Mandaue City, which had also a terrible showing in 2017. Mandaue City finished off the sports hostilities emerging with 29 gold medals, 49 silver medals and 47 bronze medals to earn the third spot in the region’s pre qualifier to the Palarong Pambansa. Bohol, which ranked third last year could only muster 25 gold medals,...

SONA spiced with classic Duterte “delivery” brand

TAGBILARAN CITY, July 25 (PIA) –True to form and substance, President Rodrigo R. Duterte read, mumbled obviously too hassled reading through teleprompter, broke away and spiced his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) with quips that stirred and connected with people: his true brand of engaging. From the initial line, when everybody loosened like the slow start of presidential speeches, Duterte immediately broke this by directed the gathering of Senators and Congressmen on the opening of the 17th Congress to the men from Mindanao now occupying the seats on top. That same day, the senate elected senator Aquilino Pimentel III (Cagayan de Oro) Senate President while earlier, Congress also elected Congressman Pantaleon Alvarez (Davao del Norte) as House Speaker. Earlier too, Palace sources have said the prepared SONA could take roughly 40 minutes excluding interruptions and pauses. Pre-SONA leaks of the presidential address also got him teary-eyed, said Communications chief Martin Andanar. But as soon as the President took to the center podium, he immediately broke his focus on the prepared speech every now and then and spiced the message with his own wit and impish remarks that has seemingly endeared him to the people who apparently abhor monotonous speeches in SONAs. While reading, sometimes stammering and mumbling possibly from long compositions on the teleprompter, the president whipped up interest in the usual brand of conversation from his heart that has him close to his audience. “He’s certainly grappling with that idiot board scrolling up his speech. At some point he stopped using it and went ad lib. At times when he returned to it he had to...
