Call for Submission: WILA-Cebu’s Paglambo Regional Creative Writing Workshop on Flash Fiction on September 14-15, 2019
The Women in Literary Arts – Cebu, Inc. (WILA), with the sponsorship of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), will conduct a creative writing workshop focusing on the flash fiction genre on September 14-15. 2019 (Saturday-Sunday). The workshop panel will be headed by one of the founding members of WILA, the literary scholar and poet, Dr. Erlinda Kintanar-Alburo. The workshop program consists of a keynote lecture, presentations by fictionists among WILA members, and a workshop proper where the works will be discussed by the panel and the workshop auditors under the supervision of a session moderator. Interested individuals should submit either a set of (a) three (3) pieces of flash fiction that should not be more than 400 words but not less that 200 or (b) two (2) pieces composed of more than 400 words but not more than 900. The entries may be in English, and/or Cebuano and must not have been published or submitted to other workshops prior to Paglambo. The participant should also submit a short bionote and an updated CV that includes a list of published works and contact information. The entries must be in the following format: Times New Roman font style, 12 font size, one inch all around margin and encoded on a document file with an 8” x11” setting. A lean delegation of dignitaries from the European Union led by European Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen, joins local bikers for three days of environment rides in Bohol, while promoting friendships, international relations and culture. A mangrove planting, to be led by the ambassador, along with Asian Development Bank official, Marc Rooijackers and the officer of the Foreign Affairs of France Jerome Riviere, accompanied by elite and amateur bikers from Bohol caps the three-day meet, greet and experience visit in the island, to happen on Sunday, in an unspecified location in Panglao island. Avid bikers as characteristic of Europeans who love the outdoors, the delegation has been going around Bohol, in routes closer to Tagbilaran and Panglao, to assess the people and the communities. Also providing assistance to the delegation’s bike tours is David Aliño of Paseo De Loon and Boholano bikers who hosted the team in their two-wheeled bike trips. Already hooked to Bohol after he proposed to his wife in the beaches of Anda, Rooijackers said he had planned to bike and enjoy the great roads, sceneries and the warm people of the island that has the perfect chance to become a wholesome tourism destination. DTI Sandugo ‘national’ Trade Fair: attracts 190 exhibitors, 11 regions
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Central Visayas opened its regional products showcase in Bohol, July 24-28 at the Island City Mall, with a bigger, wider participation of government assisted and developed products. This year’s products’ showcase feature 190 exhibitors bringing in gifts and novelty items, home decors, wear-ables and fashion accessories, home style and quality furniture and furnishings, and processed food from the country’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) of the 11 regions joining this year’s trade fair, according to DTI Regional Director Asteria Caberte. Bohol’s Sandugo Trade Expo 2019 is now a far upgrade from what used to be a provincial products’ fair held at the open grounds of Plaza Rizal, some 31 years ago. DTI Assistant Secretary Blesila Lantayona, Asec. Demphna Du-Naga of the of the Regional Operations Group, Regional Director Asteria Caberte, Bohol Governor Arthur Yap, visiting DTI regional directors and Central Visayas Provincial directors Maria Soledad Balistoy (Bohol), Nimfa Virtucio (Negros Oriental) led the ceremonial opening of the fair which accordingly aims for an ambitious P40 million in sales. Asec Lantayona, in her message however knows that the P40 million is easy to achieve citing that last year’s P25 million target was easily attained. PLDT Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. will likely end up selling their wireless communications towers to any of the seven independent private firms putting up new towers for collective use, Makati City Rep. Luis Campos Jr. said Sunday. “We see both PLDT and Globe eventually assigning their 16,000 towers to any or all of the non-aligned firms providingshared towers, now that the government has permitted at least seven of them to operate,” Campos, a deputy minority leader, said. “They (PLDT and Globe) will likely consolidate and spin off their tower assets into separate subsidiaries, and then put them up for saleto the independent tower entities,” Campos, who is counting on common towers to quickly boost Internet connectivity all over the country, said. Campos made the statement after the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) authorized Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. (AIC) to build new towers for shared use. AIC became the sixth entity authorized by the DICT to construct new common towers after ISOC Infrastructures Inc.; ISON ECP Tower Pte. Ltd.; IHS Holding Ltd.; edotco Group SdnBhd; China Energy Equipment Co. Ltd. and RT Telecom Sdn Bhd. “The immediate beneficiary of new commontowers isthe Mislatel consortium – the third telecommunications player that the government has brought in precisely to drive competition in the supply of superior Internet services,” Campos said. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) is set to meet with agriculture bigwigs to push for the mechanics of House Bill No. 8076 promoting corporate farming and providing incentives therefor. In his explanatory note, Aumentado said the bill aims to strengthen private participation in the agricultural sector to boost production by establishing a national program that will promote corporate farming. Corporations and partnerships can subsidize the cost of planting materials, particularly the country’s staples of rice and corn. When the Filipino farmers can have these corporations and partnerships to turn to for their farm inputs, the process can eliminate loan sharks who are only in the business to earn profit but not look after the welfare of this sector. Under the corporate farming concept, the management’s support to increase production will enable the farmers to produce rice that is competitive with the imported kind. The process, Aumentado said, will bring down the cost of production and at the same time, wean the farmers from loan sharks and the state of indebtedness. The concept calls for the corporations to also provide fertilizers and other inputs. The farmers can also run to them to avail of loans without the tedious process of going to the banks in the city for formal loans. This eliminates the attendant expenses for fare and food. The corporations can offer farmers with “friendly loans” and not the usurious rates of the loan sharks. Becoming soldiers in a different kind of war, troops of the 302nd Infantry Brigade adopts a new kind of shooting skills. At least 28 officers and men of the 302ndInfBde joined the skills enhancement in shooting, not with their rifles to neutralize the enemy, but with the camera, to put in more good news in these times when most you see in the newspapers are the trivial and non-inspiring. Since Bohol was declared insurgency free in 2010, the soldiers left her in Bohol shifted to a new kind of battle: that of helping communities rise from the cowering fear with the trauma of war and the government services that came but only in trickles. JAGNA, Bohol, October 18 (PIA)—Now, here is good news to all member-borrowers of the Social Security System funds who have past due calamity or salary loan early renewal program (SLERP), or member-borrowers with past due short-term loans in calamitydisaster-stricken areas, the SSS Loan Restructuring Program (LRP) or better known as SSS Loan Condonation Program has been extended. Initially offered until October 1, 2018, the SSS LRP has been extended until April 1, 2019, according to SSS Information Officer Michael Ian Mission. Speaking during the out of town Kapihansa PIA held at DyPJ in Jagna, Bohol, Mission said the extension should provide member-borrowers who have unpaid loans, ample time to avail of the condonation of penalties offer. SSS clarified that when one applies for an SSS loan, it is not the contributed premium that one borrows, but rather part of the SSS funds. Members who have been default in paying for their loans have reasoned out that it is wrong for SSS to ask them to pay as what was borrowed was the SSS Premium. This is a wrong notion, SSS authorities said. According to the SSS, the money you borrowed from the SSS comes from the funds and is not necessarily the contributed amount, that a failure to pay will necessitate the full sum including the accumulated penalties and interests taken off from the member’s retirement or death benefit. “That is why if you have a long overdue SSS Loan, the SSS Loan Condonation is your chance to pay,” clarifies Mission. From there, all the similarities end. And then comes the big difference. Yaning’s Pancit used to be your ordinary neighborhood egg noodles. Produced from a kitchen backroom in this bustling town, the egg noodles industry now has its own common service facility, but that is getting ahead of the story. Its manufacturers: a family toiled through years to earn and send their kids through college. And to make both ends meet. When the going gets tough, they produce a little bit more to get enough for the spending needs after the matriculation. For extra hands, this family hires their jobless neighbors. And as quickly did the neighbors learn egg-noodling the hard way, the faster they were also dipped into the groove in the food production job. That started a little livelihood that would soon grow and attract more and more Jagna residents who see the healthy promise getting money for food and other needs.
