PWDs plead for dormitory facilities near SPED schools
When learning facilities of the differently abled are scarce, persons with disabilities (PWDs) whose rights, advocates are pushing, are pleading the government to put up a dormitory for them to stay while studying in city schools that cater to their learning needs. Leading the pleading and giving voice to the deaf-mute and the mobility challenged PWDs were Bohol Deaf Academy (BDA) principal RizalinaPeligro. Waving the placard to catch attention to this call for action, Peligro, along with BDA Senior High School principal Julius Canda, who administers one of the very few, if not the only school in Bohol that offers senior a high school for the hearing and speech impaired, said that they have students from all over the island who are forced to rent in the city so they can attend their classes. Peligro said, for the needed special attention and care for these physically challenged students, a common facility that would allow the deaf mute to interact with persons with the same predicament like theirs, would already mean so much, in a society that commits to expand PWDs rights. Whilesome of their students are not necessarily financially capable, PDWs rights advocates support the move, considering that allowing these students to live out of the school compound to their towns every single class day is too much hassle. A team composed of persons with disabilities (PWD) proves they too can be competitive in a sport that banks on strength, endurance and timing to bring out a winning teamwork on a small boat by netting two championship awards in the recently concluded Sandugo 2019 Dragon Boat Festival held at the Miramar Promenade here. Fresh from their international dragon boat feats, Philippine Accessible Disability Services (PADS) Adaptive Dragon Boat Racing Team of Cebu City marked history again in Bohol for perfect paddling to steer into winning the Sandugo 2019 women’s category and sopen masters category. This year, 11 teams competed in the race. Composed of amputees, deaf and blind, PADS team has always worked on the motto that says “Our combined disabilities are our greatest strengths,” has shown again that disability is no barrier to being winners. PADS Adaptive Dragon Boat Racing Team beat Bohol favorites: Dumaluan Beach Resort Pirates and Dauis Wild Dragons in the 300 meter race, the locals have to content themselves by settling as first runner up and second runner up in the day long race at the Tagbilaran City-Dauis Strait July 20. Aumentado said the work on the extension of the Ubay Aiport is ongoing such that it will soon become as long as the Tagbilaran Airport. When that happens, it can already accommodate planes like those that used to land at the Tagbilaran Airport. With this infrastructure shaping up, next to the fine white sand beaches of Anda town that is a mere 45 minutes from the Ubay Airport, the solon, the governor and the economic advisers agreed that the tourism come-ons of a new loop, say of Ubay, Danao and Buenavista, must be developed in order to entice local and foreign tourists. Danao already has its adventure park featuring the zip line, canyon jump, cliff rappelling and other activities for the not so faint-hearted. SHELTER ASSISTANCE IN TUBIGON – Gov. Edgar Chatto leads the Ceremonial Blessing and Turnover of 357 units of the Modified Core Shelter Assistance Project in Tubigon. The housing project was a joint effort of the DSWD, HABITAT for Humanity, the Provincial Government of Bohol and in cooperation with LGU-Tubigon. Poor Boholano patients who have refused to go for treatment in a hospital for the confinement payments and medicine, may now find they have a government that helps them in their bills. To realize a campaign promise to make health facilities accessible to the poor, no less than Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence Go led the opening of the country’s 11th one-stop-shop for Filipinos who need medical, financial assistance from various agencies. Another one center would be opened in Ubay soon. Called the Malasakit Centers, Bohol’s one-stop-shop opens inside the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH) in Tagbilaran October 12, 2018 with SAP Go leading hospital authorities and heads of government agencies pooling their resources to prop up the facility for the poor here. “Every time we fall sick, we do not know where to run. Now, we can go to this Malasakit Center and get help,” SAP Go said. Malasakit Center is the office that directs us, SAP Go, who had been entrusted by President Rodrigo Duterte to lead the opening of these centers, one that the president lodged in his office. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Bohol scored plus points when all they rescued 64 passengers and 19 crew from a boat that ran aground early morning of October 9, 2019, in the vicinity seawaters off Danajon Bank. PCG search and rescue team dispatched to the site also assured that aside from the slight dents in the boat’s hull, the grounding boat did not damage the area, had no damaged propellers and noted no oil spills. The boat: MV South Pacific operated by Southern Pacific Transport Corporation is a 230.99 gross ton passenger ship and cargo vessel with a capacity of 204 passengers and has Cebu as home port. MV South Pacific accordingly left Bato, Leyte at 9:00 PM October 8 with 59 passengers and 19 crew members, according to the captain of the ill-fated ship, Arturo Sullano. While cruising off to Cebu, the boat strayed into the shallow waters and accidentally ran aground at about 1:00 AM, the skipper said in his report. Good the incident happened in calm seas, otherwise it could be a major problem, observers who learned of the incident commented. It was about 3:55 AM on October 9 that PCG PO1 Uy relayed to Coast Guard Tagbilaran the information and the exact coordinates of the grounding incident, for proper action. Coast Guard Station (CGS) Tagbilaran then immediately called CGS Talibon to verify and report. By about 4:15 of October 9, CGS Talibon established contact with the ill-fated boat captain, who confirmed the incident. By JUNE S. BLANCO APPLICANTS who will be hired in the jobs fair set next week in Ubay town will get free medical examination at the Don Emilio del Valle Memorial Hospital (DEDVMH). Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) said this will be his counterpart to the jobs fair arranged by the Young Initiative for the Progress of Ubay (YIPU) headed by Richie Ibale. Aumentado said new hires are required by their prospective employers to submit results of their physical examination. The results will determine if he or she is indeed in good health. He said a healthy body is home to a sound mind, hence, the future employees would be highly trainable. A complete physical examination, however, costs money. To ensure that the new hires will be able to submit promptly their requirements, medical certificate included, Aumentado broached the idea to Ibale. For the jobs fair, Aumentado said YIPU is still awaiting word from the rest of the invited companies, the jobs available and other information.
