Local biz lauds Valenzuela for peace and order

By Roderick Abad – May 24, 2018   FOLLOWING its recent success for ranking high in the region’s security index, the local government of Valenzuela received another citation—this time from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) as one of the “Most Peaceful and Safest Spots in Southeast Asia.”   The award was bestowed to the city for “exemplifying commendable initiatives toward good governance reforms and promote trade and investments, and significantly contribute to local economic development.”   In a presentation rite held at the Centennial Hall of The Manila Hotel on Wednesday, Mayor Rexlon T. Gatchalian was conferred a Plaque of Recognition for his efforts in maintaining peace and order in his area of jurisdiction.   PCCI President Alegria S. Limjoco led the awarding ceremony as one of the highlights of the chamber and associate business organization’s Second Joint General Membership Meeting.   Online database Numbeo recently cited Valenzuela as the second-safest city in Southeast Asia, next only to Singapore.   This is not the first time for the city, as it also figured on the site’s ranking back in 2015, placing third.   Aside from peace-and-order programs, the local government also implements initiatives on economic development.   Valenzuela is in the Hall of Fame of the PCCI’s Most Business Friendly City Award after bagging the accolade three times in a span of four years.   For the years 2014 and 2015, Valenzuela garnered the Hall of Fame trophy under Gatchalian’s leadership.   Read... read more

Aris to visit Israel to study drip irrigation

By JUNE S. BLANCO REP. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) will fly to Israel later today for a study tour to familiarize himself with drip and other alternative and modern forms of irrigation. Prior to his departure, however, he met with top honchos of the Department of Agriculture (DA) for a briefing on current practices and places he should visit. He also negotiated for more funds to buy modern farm equipment for the use of farmers especially those in his district. He observed that the farmers have remained poor through these years. The only way to save them, he said, is through modernization. The funds he requested will be for a couple of tractors, solar and mechanical driers, harvesters, transplanters and the like. These equipment, he said, will reduce wastage of the palay harvest by 25%, thereby increasing the income of the farmers. Aumentado equates the absence of development to the farmers’ remaining poor. After all, he said, the farmers comprise 30% of the labor force in the province. He sees hope in improving the lot of farmers through modernization – including the application of alternative irrigation methods. The solon admits that he has often wondered how the Israelis have converted their deserts into productive agricultural areas. This visit, he said, will finally give him the opportunity to facilitate the transfer of this Islaeli technology to the Boholano...

Geeks on a Beach gets bigger and better on its 4th year

The Geeks on a Beach (GOAB) international tech confab, recently held in Panglao, Bohol last August 25-26, has gotten bigger and better on its fourth and present year. Soaring high from its debut in Boracay in 2013, this year’s GOAB made a new breakthrough with its partnership with the iconic US-based tech accelerator Techstars and Facebook’s internet.org “free internet” advocacy. “The Techstars Asia-Pacific Summit, a private gathering of 100 startup weekend leaders in the region, was held in the same venue two days prior to GOAB. This year’s GOAB also featured stronger ties with StartupPH.org, a newly formed umbrella organization of advocates for Philippine startups and tech industry. StartupPH.org includes the core group that completed the Philippine Startup Roadmap in 2015. ” said Tina Amper, TechTalks.ph Founder and GOAB organizer. “Apart from the wider participation of the international community with delegates from the US, Singapore, Malaysia, among others, the recently concluded GOAB was also marked by stronger government support with the inspiring presence of Senator Bam Aquino and Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto,” added Amper. Senator Aquino is a strong proponent of the PH startup bill.
