DTI holds roundtable meeting with Papua New Guinea PM, PH biz execs

Pasay – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) organized a Roundtable Meeting with top Philippine business executives to welcome Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Ministry of Finance James Marape last 16 May 2018. The meeting was organized to spur trade relations between PNG and the Philippines (PH). “We are committed in having Papua New Guinea as a strategic economic partner through greater bilateral trade and investment ties, as well as substantive engagements in APEC. We are optimistic that even as we develop broader links of friendship between our two countries, we can expand opportunities for trade and investment,” said DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez. According to the trade chief, PNG can look into investment opportunities in agricultural products as well as oil and gas exploration in PH. Likewise, PH can export more processed food, electronics, machineries and equipment, packaging materials and appliances to PNG. To strengthen trade relations between the two countries, DTI is also proposing a bilateral economic cooperation through a Joint Economic Commission (JEC). Meanwhile, Prime Minister O’Neill said: “Our relationship with the Philippines is very strong. We believe in the same principles.” The Prime Minister also opened the discussion on an agricultural partnership. He highlighted the vast agricultural land in PNG and their small population, which is an opportunity for PH to produce rice in PNG. “We want to promote rice in Papua New Guinea, and we want it be a Filipino partnership, rather than anyone else.” Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel Piñol agreed in getting Filipinos to invest and plant rice in PNG.  “We can help them produce their requirements and... read more

Globe interconnection with competition extends to Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran

Interconnection enables customers to call customers of other providers without long-distance calls Globe Telecom said interconnection of its landline service Globelines with its competition continue to expand as the two parties recently agreed to extend the collaboration to include the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte and Biliran. The interconnection enables Globelines customers in the Leyte, Southern Leyte and Biliran provinces to call customers of other telco providers without additional charges as they no longer have to pay for long distance charges when calling one another. The interconnection, which took effect last September 1, will allow customers to realize substantial savings. Prior to the interconnection, landline customers of Globelines and other telco providers were charged with long distance rate when making phones to one another. With the interconnection, Globe customers can simply dial the seven-digit telephone number to connect with other telco providers and vice-versa. “As interconnection reduces the cost of connectivity among our customers, Globe will continue to pursue interconnection in line with our commitment to provide affordable and easily accessible ways of communication, necessary to further enhance economic growth,” Globe General Counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo stressed. Interconnection among telco providers is in line with provisions for compulsory interconnection of authorized public telecommunications carriers under Republic Act 7925. The law aims to create a universally accessible and fully integrated nationwide telecommunications network to encourage more infrastructure investments from the private sector that would benefit the consumers. In addition to Leyte, Southern Leyte and Biliran, Globe has existing interconnection agreement with its main competition in Metro Manila, Cavite, Iloilo, Batangas, Cebu, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Leyte, Davao City, Pampanga,...

PPCRV Volunteers Perform Dry Run of Parallel Count System

PPCRV volunteers led by Fr. Felix Warli Salise performed a dry run of the parallel count system for Bohol local election results on May 7, 2016 at the CAD Laboratory at the Holy Name University in Dampas, Tagbilaran City. The parallel count system is developed and maintained by volunteer developers and trainees from Auza.Net. There were more than 30 volunteers who showed up for the dry run and the organizers are expecting more volunteers help ensure the sanctity of the electoral process. On May 9, the volunteers are expected to start to encode the results from the printed election returns from each precinct all over the province of Bohol. They may need to work for about a week or until the last available election return is retrieved. The system was developed during the 2013 elections by volunteer developers and was updated to accommodate the changes required for the 2016 elections. Auza.Net technology consultant Jerome Auza hopes to be able to have access to the per precinct data from the transparency server provided by COMELEC on May 9 onward. This is in order to to have a closed loop comparison between the printed election returns and the transmitted data to COMELEC. This way, PPCRV will be able to conclude that the data transmitted are exactly the same as that on the election returns. The PPCRV helps to prevent election fraud by making sure that the tally at the municipal, district, provincial and national levels match with what is reported by COMELEC. However, this process cannot detect fraud if the results are pre-programmed on the vote counting machines. To detect this...
