Rep. Aris’ surgical mission beneficiaries “pampered”

By JUNE S. BLANCO HUNDREDS of patients with cleft lips, cleft palates and teeth problems can now freely smile without worry of being made fun of, teased or bullied, due to their facial deformities. This after Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) invited anew the medical-surgical team of the Faces ofTomorrow (FOT) headed by its director, Dr. Brian Rubinstein, who will perform the corrective surgeries on these patients at the Medical Mission Group Hospital and Health Services or the Bohol Cooperative Hospital in Dampas District, this city.  Aumentado said the team members come from different states in America while the Abounding in Love Foundation is the non-profit organization that connects Filipino children to cleft lip and palate surgeries. Abounding also provides ongoing medical, educational and spiritual support after surgery. All donations it gets go directly to help these disadvantaged children. The surgeries will start on Monday, Feb. 12. But listing is now on-going until Sunday, Feb. 11. As in the previous missions, patients will received not only the free surgeries, but, especially for those coming in from other provinces, they will also receive fare refunds and fare for the trip back, free board and lodging – and even toys for the children. They had heard about Aumentado’s surgical medical through the news and public service announcements over the radio. Patients staying over for post-surgery checkups or waiting for their turn at the operating table will be provided with free board and lodging. Those coming in from the towns will get subsistence allowance for their meals. Those from towns out of radio coverage got alerted on the free surgical-dental mission from streamers, newspapers and social media. FOT-Philippines... read more

DTI Region 5 – The Department of Trade and Industry in Albay imposed a Price Freeze on basic commodities in the whole Province of Albay as lava continues to flow from the Mayon Volcano. D2 towns to align dev’t moves with district master plan – Aris

By JUNE S. BLANCO REP. Erico Aristotle “Aris” Aumentado will discuss with the mayors of the towns in Bohol’s 2nd district their respective development plans to ensure that these jive with the District Economic Master Plan (DEMP). Aumentado said he will meet the mayors shortly to ensure that their plans dovetail with the DEMP, the details of which are now being finalized by a team from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). The draft DEMP identifies infrastructure, tourism potentials, economic zones and telecommunications as priority key areas. The solon said only when these are established will a place be attractive to potential investors. More often than not, he said, investors pour money only into businesses that they are currently involved in. When they find a locale’s business climate to be suitable, they tend to expand. When they feel the business environment to be friendly, they may venture into new but related businesses. Putting up infrastructure like seaports, airports, roads and bridges, telecommunications will definitely make a place inviting to locators. He said these will facilitate the transport going in and out of the locality of goods for raw materials and finished products for marketing. The solon added that he has enlisted the help of concerned agencies in upgrading the airport, seaports and other facilities in Ubay – the perceived district “center”. The seaport has been expanded while the airport runway will be extended and widened. The DEMP will serve as the district’s development “bible” to make headway for progress. Otherwise, he said, development will be topsy-turvy. Harmonizing the towns’ development plans, he said, augurs well for the synchronized and...

Aris bill to give retirement benefits to brgy. officials

By JUNE S. BLANCO “GRADUATING” barangay officials are now one step closer to retirement benefits. This after Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (Bohol, 2nd District) filed a bill seeking the grant of benefits upon retirement of the punong barangay, members of the Sangguniang Pambarangay, barangay secretaries and treasurers as well as the barangay tanods, barangay health workers (BHWs), day care workers (DCWs), and members of the Lupong Tagapamayapa. The move, in effect, amends Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code. It expands the scope of “barangay officials” as expounded in RA 7160. Under House Bill 325, officials who are 60 years old and have served the barangay for at least nine years in an elective or appointive capacity stand to get a lump sum upon their retirement equivalent to their honorarium for 12 months but not to exceed P100,000. Aumentado said the bill also intends to recognize the efforts of the barangay officials who, more often than not, are the frontliners in addressing problems in their locatoities, especially the remote ones. In these cases, he said, when barangay folks manage to contact the police, sheer distance, rough roads and poor logistics often make their arrival too late – either the troublemaker has left, or the trouble has gone beyond control. He added that the retirement age of 60 instead of the 65 of most civil servants also intends to let the retirees enjoy their remaining years with some funds to start a business or an income-generating project while still active and able. In the Philippine setting where extended families are often the norm, the head of the family, who...

NOT FOR LONG

There must be something stirring the police to keep the fight against drugs. That something should be huge enough to make drug successes a breakfast fare in most Bohol homes. But the increasing spike in drug-related apprehensions tells us two things: either this fight is dead serious. Or this fight is a sick joke. If, for every drug personality caught, we take a sip from our morning coffee, nervousness would catch us by noon. At the current rate that the police are slamming steel gates on drug offenders, it wouldn’t be a wonder if one day, our jails would be more populated than outside it. And at the same rate we are stacking evidences and stashing drugs from the streets, we would be the biggest hoarders of illegal substances and firearms, in no time at all. Of course, finally putting these drug personalities behind bars is another long story. While police account close to 50 drug suspects every month, the courts dispose an average of 10-15 cases, for the same period. In the last months for example, of the ten drug cases that got to courts, joint drug teams only score between one to two convictions. And still, relentlessly, the police are out on the streets, stalking, staking, waiting to pounce on the pusher so they can populate the cells some more. And yet, the problem seems worse than yesterday. We may be winning the battle, but we are losing the war. Miserably. We have seen the police pursue a cop-killer and in no time at all, they had him. We have seen them wage this fight, and still...
