OFW docu verification at POEA regional offices

RETURNING Overseas Filipino Workers can now process their papers and other transactions with less hassles at the nearest local Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) offices.

This as the POEA launches the Balik Manggagawa (BM) Program, one that makes POEA services more convenient by getting them accessible to the OFW wherever he may be, says Administrator Jennifer Jardin-Manalili.

OFWs who want to file home leaves from abroad or who are planning to return to their countries of employment can now process their papers at the POEA offices in the regions or in the Philippine Labor Offices (PLO) abroad.

With this development, OFWs needs are served and addressed more swiftly and it can also help decongest the main BM processing center in Manila, according to a press statement by POEA.

That means, with the BM, services, which used to be done at the POEA Main Office along Ortigas in Manila are now available at the POEA regional centers, extension units, satellite officer and deputized Overseas Workers Welfare Administration regional offices and units.

Moreover, the same services are also available at PLOs at various Philippine Embassies and consulate offices abroad.

Over this, valid passports, working permits and relevant documents can all be verified and processed at the offices mentioned, says POEA. (PIA)

The MDGs, agreed by countries years ago hopes to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women.

The same goals hope to reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV AIDS and other diseases.

The countries also aim to ensure environmental sustainability by developing a global partnership for development.

Over a hundred million people from across the globe stood up last year to press for these goals, the stand up website said.

More than halfway to the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), while major advances in the fight against poverty and hunger have begun to slow, UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon bared that overall progress has been too slow for most of the targets to be met by 2015.

Most rich countries took the economic crisis as a reason for not fully giving in the pledged commitment the website said. (PIA)

Supporters march to protest delays in RH voting

Supporters of the “Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2009” marched from Sandigan Bayan, Batasan Complex to the South Gate Entrance of the House of Representatives, Quezon City.

Pregnant women led the march along with other leaders who have been advocating for the passage of the bill since the start of the 14th Congress.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Angsioco, Secretary General of the Reproductive Health Advocacy Network (RHAN) is saddened by recent developments. “Bishops are harassing lawmakers who are supportive of the reproductive health bill,” said Angsioco. “They are talking to lawmakers and asking them not to attend sessions so there will be no quorum,” Angsioco said. “Some of the authors are even asked to retract or else leaders of the Catholic church will campaign against them, specifically in their own district, Angsioco added.

Angsioco calls on the Bishops, “please allow Congress to do its work, and do not intimidate our lawmakers. Let them do their work and for heaven’s sake be fair.” She also called on lawmakers to approve the measure now.”

She reminded lawmakers that 11 mothers are dying every day due to pregnancy and pregnancy-related complications. “Your vote for the bill will save lives,” Angsioco concluded.” (RHAN)
