Public warned against unregistered vitamin C syrup

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public against buying and consuming unregistered vitamin C syrups for children.

In an advisory, the FDA reported that unregistered vitamin C syrups are being sold in schools in Cagayan Valley and possibly in other regions in the country.

The FDA is investigating reports that a health product labeled as “Citrange Syrup” is being sold at P380 in cash or on installment. The product reportedly contains vitamin C, honeybee and royal jelly, but the FDA said the peddler claims that it helps cure asthma and improves memory.

The FDA said some parents were deceived into buying the product not only because of the claimed benefits but because the peddler showed a letter allegedly from the Department of Education endorsing the product.

Parents said that after their children consumed the syrup, the kids became too sleepy and lazy to attend classes.

The report is still under FDA investigation. Initial findings of the FDA Inspectorate, however, showed that Citrange vitamin syrup is not registered with the FDA. The alleged manufacturer, Linderbergh Food Products Valley in Valenzuela City, has an expired FDA License to Operate (RDII-MM-F-2454) and has stopped operating since December 2008. As an FDA-licensed food manufacturer before, it manufactured flavored drink concentrates but not Citrange vitamin syrup.

FDA warns the public and consumers, especially the children and parents, not to fall prey to the marketing schemes of unscrupulous peddlers.

For more information and inquiry, kindly email the FDA via info@fda.gov.ph. To report any unregistered health product, please email us via report@fda.gov.ph. (FDA)

Palace serious in unearthing pork barrel anomaly, asks press not to preempt inquiry

Malacañang appealed Thursday not to preempt the ongoing investigation to the P10-billion pork barrel anomaly stressing that the inquiry will go where the evidence leads it.

In a press briefing in Malacañang, reporters asked Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda if the Aquino government is still interested in running after the big fishes with regards to the pork barrel scam.

“Don’t preempt. My request to the press is don’t preempt this government. The President has already said: ‘Where the evidence leads, we will go there’,” Lacierda said.

“So please don’t preempt our administration. The investigations are ongoing and, once charges are filed, you will know.”

Fugitive Janet Lim-Napoles surrendered to President Benigno S. Aquino III Wednesday evening in Malacanang. Napoles is facing a serious illegal detention charge.

The President sees Napoles’s surrender as a step towards the right direction of achieving justice and finally uncovering the truth concerning the alleged misuse of the priority development assistance fund (PDAF), Lacierda said.

The camp of Napoles said it would cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the multi-billion pork barrel scam.

The anomaly stemmed from the alleged anomalous spending by some lawmakers of their pork barrel allocations through the use of bogus or non-existing foundations and other organizations.

On Wednesday, the President announced a P10-million reward offer to anyone who can provide information to authorities that could lead to the arrest of Napoles. (PND)

PNoy calls for abolition of Priority Development Assistance Fund

PRESIDENT Benigno S. Aquino III has called for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) amid allegations of misuse of some P10 billion public funds.

In his statement in Malacanang on Friday, the Chief Executive directed Budget Secretary Florencio Abad to consult with Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. regarding the removal of the PDAF and the crafting of a new system.

“Inatasan ko na si Secretary Abad ng DBM na kumonsulta kina Speaker Belmonte at Senate President Drilon upang pandayin ang mekanismo, at isumite ito kaagad sa akin. Ilalatag natin ito upang ang mga alokasyon sa bawat distrito ay mapabilang na sa ating Pambansang Budget simula sa panukalang budget ng 2014,” the President said.

Established in 1990, the PDAF was intended to bring development to every part of the country by making sure that every congressman will have an assured allocation for his district even if he is a member of the silent committee in Congress.

The President wants a new system to ensure that public funds are appropriately used.

He assured the public that charges will be filed against those involved in the P10-billion pork barrel scam.

The President expressed his confidence and trust in the integrity of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, Justice Secretary Leila M. de Lima, and COA chairperson Grace Pulido-Tan.

He, likewise, vowed to implement budgetary reforms to rid corruption.

The President is calling on the public to help the government scrutinize government projects to prevent corruption. (PCOO)

Giingong sama sa nahitabo niadtong Arab Spring sa Libay nga naa sa 4,000 ka OFWs ang gipaule ug nakakuha dayon og trabaho sa AG&P, usa ka manufacturing facility sa Batangas.

“Secretary (Rosalinda) Baldoz, I’m sure, will be preparing to assist them together with TESDA and other government entities to impart the necessary skills for reintegration. Automatic naman ‘yon for any returning OFW. Pero, dito nga, dahil nga forced, dahil nga medyo 5,000 is not an inconsequential number, I’m sure naghahanda na ‘yung mga kaukulang departamento,” matud pa sa Presidente. (PIA-Bohol/ecb)
