Federalism advocates holds forum in Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY, August 17 (PIA)–The Constitutional Reformers to Federalism headed by Atty. Raul Lambino, lead convenor of PDU30-CoRe in partnership with the Provincial Government of Bohol and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), hold a forum on federalism in Bohol on Aug. 16 at the Bohol Cultural Center, this city.

The PDU30-CORE team is also composed of Atty. Emmanuel Tumanda, Atty. Mike Planas and Dennis Ancheta.

The federalism forum kicks off the information and education campaign for the province attended by provincial, municipal, and barangay officials, national government agencies, the business sector, the religious sector, and the academe.

One of the priority programs of the Duterte administration is the proposed shift from presidential unitary to parliamentary federal form of government.

This is considered as a strategy to introduce real reforms and genuine change in our country for the good and benefit of our people and citizens.

Gov. Edgar Chatto expressed support for the initiatives to inform and educate the people on federalism as he himself is a supporter of local autonomy and decentralization as effective in directly responding to the needs of the people.

“We need an informed choice or basis when we decide as a nation to transform towards a better and a higher level of state,“ Chatto said.

Lambino explained that under a federal form of government, each state or region has its own discretion in managing its economy, natural resources, and law.
Compared to the central government in Manila, Lambino said regional governments have a better grasp on their region’s various concerns. Greater independence would allow them to provide more appropriate solutions.
Ancheta, a history professor cited the advantages of federalism which includes – faster decision making, more power over funds and resources, promotes specialization, government will be closer to the people, more political stability, decongest Metro Manila, and among others.

Federalism is defined as a system of government where powers are distributed between the central and regional governments. (ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
