PNoy orders gov’t. agencies to ensure safety of Pinoys in Korea

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Wednesday said he has ordered concerned
government agencies to ensure the safety of Filipinos in areas affected by the ongoing
tension between North and South Korea.

We are closely monitoring and I have tasked the relevant agencies to review their plans
concerning the safety of our citizens there,” Aquino said in a text message.

On Tuesday, North Korea unleashed a barrage of artillery on a South Korean island near
disputed western border. The attack set buildings ablaze and killed at least two marines..

Aquino said he and other government officials will meet on the matter and come up with the
government’s position after gathering and evaluating validated information.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the
Philippine Embassy in Seoul is closely monitoring developments in South Korea.

DFA spokesman Ed Malaya said that coordination meetings are being conducted by the DFA
in connection with the welfare of Filipinos in North and South Korea.

The DFA said there are around 60,000 Filipinos in South Korea. Most of them live in Seoul,
far from the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong that was attacked by North Korea. (PIA)

President Aquino open to amend Proclamation No. 50

President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Tuesday that he is open to the possibility of
amending Proclamation No. 50 granting “amnesty to active and former personnel of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines and their supporters who may have committed acts or
omissions punishable under the revised penal code, the articles of war or other special laws
committed in connection with the Oakwood Mutiny, the Marines Stand-Off and the Manila
Pen Incident and Related Incidents.”

In a press conference held at the Yazaki-Torres Manufacturing Plant in Calamba, Laguna
on Tuesday morning, the President said he was for amending said proclamation if the
discussions between the three branches of government (executive, legislative and judicial)
warrant such.

It was the senate that initiated this proposal for amnesty, so we expect this matter to be under
discussions, since we have three branches of government, the President said, adding that
whatever the senate decides will be taken into consideration.

“We are open to amendments that are being proposed,” the Chief Executive continued. We
are ready to improve Proclamation 50.” (PCOO)

Mt.

Base sa taho sa Associated Press, gihimo sa Santo Papa ang giingong komento sa usa ka German book nga gipanguluhan og “Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times” nga gikatakdang ipagawas ning buwana.

(PIA)

Church bells to ring 57 times on Tuesday for victims of Maguindanao massacre

For 57 seconds, church bells will ring out throughout the country on Tuesday in memory of the 57 people killed in the grisly Maguindanao massacre last year.

The Catholic Church-run Radio Veritas on Sunday announced that it was spearheading the simultaneous pealing of Church bells on Nov. 23, the first year of the gruesome murders, as tribute to the victims and their kin, who continued to seek justice.

Fr. Anton Pascual, president and chief operating officer of Radio Veritas on Sunday said that “the Church is joining the struggle in asking the government to finish the trial promptly because justice delayed is justice denied”.

Meanwhile, Malacañang said that it was doing all it could to ensure the speedy trial of the suspects in the worst political killing in the country.

Palace deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte said that Malacañang hoped that the Supreme Court would heed calls for a live TV coverage of the so-called “trial of the century.” (PIA)

Aquino scraps ‘Pilipinas kay Ganda’ slogan

President Benigno S. Aquino Jr. expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposed tourism slogan Pilipinas kay Ganda saying the ”stakeholders themselves were not happy about it.”

In a press conference during the call on him by international boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao at the Premier Guest House, the President said “he met with the stakeholders recently and they showed their discontent over the new slogan.”

“Maybe we do not have to fine tune the slogan but look for something more appropriate. There was an old slogan, though still acceptable to many, but I tasked Tourism Secretary Bert Lim to fix it and find a new one based on the blue print of the tourism program and I will review all the details,” the President told reporters.

On Friday night, the President said he recently met with Secretary Lim to discuss the details of the master plan. “Some of it I can’t really reveal because we are still embarking on a non traditional approach in trying to really promote tourism in the country.”

Among them is the recognition of the assets that we have, such as the seafarers, who the
President said are the single biggest nationality flying the world’s oceans.

The President said the DoT submitted a master plan that contains a lot of changes. “I will first look at every detail that they placed in that master plan,” he added.

He said there should have been more research and focused group discussions in working out
the logo and the slogan before the launch. (PCOO)
