Trade chief highlights importance of product packaging to MSMEs: Pack! Pinas roadshow wraps up before hundreds of regional entrepreneurs

CAVITE — Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon M. Lopez emphasized the importance of well-designed product packaging to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the final leg of the Pack! Pinas roadshow last 29 May in Cavite. “As part of the mandate given by President Rodrigo Duterte to help MSMEs, DTI is applying a 360-degree approach in MSME development,” said Secretary Lopez. “Part of this is levelling up the product packaging, for it to standout in the market place.  The packaging serves also as the advertising at the point of sale.   MSMEs are not usually exposed to the latest trend, designs, and on how best to present and preserve product quality and they are often hampered by the required Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) that limits their capability to improve their packaging, and these are the barriers being solved in these fora and expo”, Lopez said. Cavite is the final stop of the packaging roadshow. The Visayas leg was held in Tacloban last 3 – 4 May and was attended by 508 participants, 317 of them MSMEs. Meanwhile, the Mindanao leg in Cagayan de Oro City was attended by 720 participants, 501 of which were MSMEs. Though this round of the roadshow draws to a close, Sec. Lopez assured MSMEs that the roadshow will roll out in other regions soon. With the aim of bringing packaging experts and suppliers closer to MSMEs throughout the Philippines, visitors during the two-day event in Cavite were treated to business matching sessions; seminars on packaging, branding, and design; and workshops and interactive training sessions. Packaging suppliers who participated also waived their required... read more

PCCI-Aklan wants review of cancellation of flights

By Jun Aguirre – May 24, 2018   KALIBO, Aklan—The local chapter of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI-Aklan) urges government, especially the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, to review the cancellation of several plane flights at the Kalibo International Airport (KIA).   PCCI-Aklan Secretary-General Guidon de la Cruz said several flights to and from Metro Manila and Cebu have been canceled after nearby Boracay Island was ordered closed for six months starting on April 26.   The closure also saw airline companies doubling ticket prices bound for the KIA.   “Because of this, businessmen, students and balikbayans have to travel to other nearby airports, such as the Caticlan Airport and the Roxas City Airport, to go to Manila. Direct flights to Cebu have also been canceled,” de la Cruz said.   “The reduction of commercial flights at the KIA created economic difficulties for both passengers and cargo traffic,” he added. Meanwhile, the roll-on, roll-off service from Caticlan to Batangas port is also full, brought about by summer travel and strong basic trade between Luzon and the Visayas region, he added.   The PCCI-Aklan board has filed a resolution to engage airline firms in consultation, thereby encouraging them to provide additional flight for Manila-Kalibo and restore the Kalibo-Cebu route even on limited basis.   “The reduction of plane flights also does not help promote local tourism, trade and commerce, which are supposed to be increasing due to expansion of e-commerce, resulting into convenience in the movement of people and goods across our islands,” de la Cruz further said.   Read...

TAGBILARAN CITY, October 14 (PIA)–There is a current move by information communication technology (ICT) and business process management (BPM) bigwigs to shake off the list of next wave cities (NWC) in lieu of a more reliable location profile. No less than Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) president Jonathan de Lazurriaga bared this at the Kapihan sa PIA Thursday, a day before Bohol opens its doors again to prospecting investors during the Bohol ICT Summit. ICT and BPM investors especially the big ticket call center companies into business process out sourcing have always looked for possible locations of expansion of operations. This need pushed local industry leaders to rank potential locations and called them the NWC where in a list, the industry stakeholders update over the years. Lazurriaga explained that the NWC is a distinction given to possible locations all over the country based on four identified factors. He said one factor considered is the availability of local talents like call center workers aptly trained adopting a global standard for competitiveness. Under this, he explained that a place must have sufficient training institutions that come up to quality and quantity of the graduates to hopefully man the possible investments. Secondly, national industry stakeholders look for the most business friendly environment in a location. Investors especially in the BPO would like to settle in an area that would be easy to make business with, safe where crime and corruption is inexistent to low. Third, BPM investors want power and water service utilities that are cheap and reliable, the location is safe and costs of living is manageable, social issues like traffic,...
