328,262 Filipinos find jobs under CLEEP

Through the Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) program, some 328,262 Filipinos were able to find jobs.

CLEEP was launched to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis on vulnerable sectors such as displaced workers.
According to reports by the National Anti-Poverty Commission, as of September 25, a total of 328,262 people landed jobs, representing 70.45 percent of the targeted 465,945 workers nationwide under CLEEP.

Citing the NAPC report, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that “in crisis situations, government intervention to extend relief to the people, particularly those most vulnerable to hostile economic forces, can never be overemphasized”. (PIA)

Hilary Clinton’s forthcoming visit reaffirms good US-RP relations

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham’s visit reaffirms that the Philippines and the United States have strong diplomatic relationship.

The two-day visit, November 12–13, is an opportune time for the Secretary of State to meet with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to discuss with her important issues.

The November 12-13 visit is Secretary Clinton’s second trip to the Philippines but her first as secretary of state. This will be Clinton’s second visit to Southeast Asia and third to Asia since being appointed Obama’s secretary of state. (PIA)

DOH traditional health program endorses 10 herbal plants

Department of Health (DOH) endorses 10 herbal plants which have been thoroughly tested and have been clinically proven to have medicinal value in the relief and treatment of various ailments.

About 400 plants in the Philippines which have medicinal or therapeutic values. However, only ten have been clinically tested to have medicinal value.

Lagundi tablets are mainly used for the relief of coughs and asthma.

Sambong tablet is a diuretic that helps in the excretion of urinary stones and can also be used as an edema.

Tsaang Gubat 250mg tablet is effective in treating intestinal motility and also used as a mouth wash since the leaves of this shrub has high fluoride content.

The fourth is Akapulco is used to treat ringworms and skin fungal infections.

The Ampalaya is most known as a treatment of diabetes (diabetes mellitus) for the non-insulin dependent patients.

Bawang mainly reduces cholesterol in the blood and hence, helps control blood pressure.

Bayabas is primarily used as an antiseptic, to disinfect wounds. Also, it can be used as a mouth wash to treat tooth decay and gum infection.

Niyog-Niyogan is effective in the elimination of intestinal worms, particularly the Ascaris and Trichina.

Ulasimang Bato is effective in fighting arthritis and gout.

Yerba Buena, or commonly known as Peppermint, is used as an analgesic to relive body aches and pain.

There are other herbs and herbal remedies like banaba, virgin coconut oil, mangosteen, gumamela, luyang dilaw, silymarin, and countless others.

There is no substitute for the services of a licensed medical practitioner. Consult with a doctor knowledgeable with herbal medicine or Philippine medicinal plants before taking or mixing herbs with prescription and non-prescription drugs. PGMA extends gun amnesty program for one more month

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo extends gun amnesty program for one more month through Executive Order No. 817-A, stipulating the extension period from November 1 to 30, 2009.

During this extension period, individual and juridical entities may renew their expired firearms licenses or register their unregistered firearms with the Philippine National Police.

Gun amnesty is a part of the Philippine National Police’s ongoing efforts to keep guns off the streets. (PIA)

GSIS gives P233.4-M in hospitalization discounts thru GHSP

Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has given a total of P233.4 million hospitalization discounts through its GSIS Hospitalization Support Program (GHSP).

The total number of clients that availed of the program from its inception in 2004 up to end-September 2009 was 158,615 patients.

Under the GHSP, GSIS members, their dependents and old-age pensioners can avail of discounts in medical services from partner-hospitals, including outpatient services and emergency cases, medicines, as well as discounts in professional fees of select physicians.

If the patient has an eCard, he may just present this card to the GSIS coordinator in the partner-hospital upon admission to avail of the discounts.

The GHSP can also be used in combination with the Philhealth card and health maintenance organization (HMO) card of the patient. In availing of the hospitalization discount, Philhealth will be applied first, followed by the HMO and finally the GHSP. (GSIS/PIA)
