SM opens its first Go Lokal! store

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced the opening of another Go Lokal! store in partnership with the country’s largest mall chain, SM Group, on 17 May at SM Makati. “This launching is another milestone for DTI’s initiatives to provide greater market access for our micro entrepreneurs that are part of Go Lokal!,” said DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez. Last March, SM Group signed an agreement with DTI which allowed SM’s Kultura Filipino to operate and manage Go Lokal. It will display and sell world-class products sourced from micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) all over the Philippines which offer consumers, institutional buyers, and tourists, value for their money. DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez together with SM Investments Corporation Vice-Chaiperson Teresita Sy-Coson will lead the ribbon cutting ceremonies which will be held at the ground level of SM Makati where a 3-day Go Lokal exhibit will also be up. Meanwhile, the Go Lokal permanent store located at the 2nd level concourse area near Kultura Filipino will be open to the public starting May 17. “Most of our small businesses are unable to pay high rental fees in consumer-frequented areas. Through Go Lokal, DTI with its partners aim to provide support services by providing free-spaces for their products for a certain period of time,” explained Secretary Lopez. DTI sees Go Lokal! as an opportunity for the country’s MSMEs to go mainstream and test the marketability of their products without incurring the high costs of operating a retail outlet. SM Group, the largest chain mail in the country, vowed to help DTI in achieving its goal of helping small businesses by...

Danao puts up canyon swing

YOU think the country’s longest and highest zipline is a push-over? Wait until Danao could put up the dreaded canyon swing! According to a website by Shootover Canyon Swing in Queensland New Zealand, a canyon swing includes jumping off a platform while fitted to a chair or body harness and attached to jump ropes. The configuration is such that your hands and feet are free from entanglements while you do jump combinations. Gravity does the rest. Danao Mayor Thomas Louis Gonzaga and Vice Mayor Jose Cepedoza have been closely keeping an eye on the local surveying team so they could judiciously decide which platform can deliver the most exhilarating swing of all, says tourism officer Loinda Corotico Saluan. Danao, a town 72 kilometers away from Tagbilaran, is struggling to beat its own economic problems by pushing for extreme eco-and educational adventure tourism. Saluan said the canyon swing would be their next aim as she pointed to a long queue of local and foreign tourists nervously fixing their head gears. The headgear is a standard measure before one is allowed to do the strapping of body harnesses in the town’s newly opened “suislide”. The suislide, Danao’s best extreme adventure experience as of yet is a 550 meters zipline where tourists slide for their life while suspended up in a canyon of about 250 to 300 meters over the gurgling Wahig River and its rocky beds. But upping the fear scare factor, Danao wants the scariest: canyon swing complete with free-falls, of course following the standards of safety in extreme sports, Saluan said. TBTK 2009 : To Bohol, We’re Homeward Bound

Among the many positive traits of the Bolanon, none is more unique and endearing than his fabled attachment to his home province. Wherever the Bolanon casts his fate, no matter how long he’s away, he will always find the time to visit and a reason to revisit, timed usually during a fiesta celebration. This homing instinct has been the subject of many Bolanon jokes, but far from embarrassing the Boholano into changing his ways, they have only reinforced his deep need to come back to his roots. Tigum Bolanon sa Tibuok Kalibutan taps into this collective Boholano passion through a grand homecoming every three years. Under its current leadership, the TBTK has been celebrated twice and is gunning up for a grander third fete on July 14-26, this year. With the assurance of the province’ governor:Honorable Governor Erico B. Aumentado, you can be assured this will be the best ever in the history of Bohol. The past two TBTKs under the leadership of chairman Betty Veloso-Garcia have been resounding successes, really coming into its own in 2003 when it gained notice in media and given a boost by the Department of Tourism. As a result, attendance more than doubled from the previous tigum, with Boholano immigrants coming in from as far as Africa and the Scandinavian countries to revel in the festivities. One of the major components of the TBTK , Garcia had conceived in 2003 was the invitation of the schools and universities to hold a school reunion. Since then, alumni homecoming by Bohol’s institutions of learning are part of the celebration, so timed around to ensure maximum...

Despite groups’ no-show at talks, Peace workers to seek other talk venues for ‘left’ groups

A no-show by invited cause oriented groups during the latest Local Peace Forum (LPF) last week failed to dampen the spirit of Bohol peace advocates. During a recent interview, Capitol Peace and Order consultant, Romeo Teruel said the LPF would continue to find ways and opportunities where issues and concerns can be ventilated when the Provincial Peace and Order Council could not provide the venue. Local peace advocates also hope that this year would be a year when the stalled talks resume. (rachiu/PIA) Click for full...

Report rain-affected farms – APC urges

Wary that there might be a problem in Bohol’s rice production this cropping season, an aggie research facility head here urges farmers to report anything unusual about their farms. This as the government through the Department of Agriculture and the Capitol distributed roughly 22 thousand bags of certified and hybrid rice to maximize on the harvest and stockpile a good buffer for the speculation of another rice crisis in 2009. A hybrid and certified rice farm yields 3.5 to 6 tons per hectare while traditional rice yields much less, data from the APC shows. (rachiu/PIA) Click here for more...
